There is no one today who will say that the Mulder trade worked out well but comparing it to Carlton for Wise is WILDLY overstating the case. Trading Dan Haren turned out bad; we don't need hyperbole to exaggerate it.

He might have been in the conversation for the third best LH starter, which is of little consequence when the two people ahead of him were like twice as valuable, though Johnson took a big step back himself in '05.

I just don't think it was that obvious of a bad move as some say it was. I certainly don't think there is any lesson to be learned from it. When you're the best team in baseball but you continue to stumble in the post season you start to think maybe you don't have the horses on the mound to dominate a short series. So you look to find an ace that's available and you deal some of your young talent. It's not as though that, in itself, is a recipe for disaster. It's just that in this case, it was. As much as anyone wants to say there were red flags, etc., what happened with both players involved is really somewhat unique. To be that successful from age 21 or 22 through age 26 and then basically be out of the game by age 28. I don't care what anyone says, nobody could have seen that coming. And it's compounded by Haren turning into an all star. It kind of goes back to the argument someone on here was making last week...the results of the trade were disastrous but at the time of the deal, was it really considered a bad move? Or do we simply grade the trade based on the results? Sure, some of you will insist that it was stupid at the time and it turned out that way but I've always thought it was a justifiable move, even if it did end up horrible for us.
