Re: Outer Space Thread
We build this big awesome array and then we find a signal that we know is an ET civilization. Then what?
The thought of aliens that are advanced kind of scares the [expletive] out of me. I don't know why. I know we aren't alone in the universe but I guess knowing for sure is unsettling. I also wonder if it will even be a big deal by then? Sure it's a big deal scientifically but to the average person. I know now it would be huge but in 20 years I gotta think enough people will think that it's inevitable there are others out there it's not a big deal.

I wonder how the discovery of ET will effect religious beliefs.

I assume most people wouldn't believe it. We couldn't see it, touch it, talk to it, etc. They'd just say it's science making things up. Some of course would believe it. I'm not sure how it would work. I don't think the thought of there being ETs really is that out of line with religion. If you believe God created all this there has to be a chance he created other life too. Of course I don't know and am just throwing out things.go birds wrote:I wonder how the discovery of ET will effect religious beliefs.
Now, a big mothership hovering over NYC. That probably changes everything.

I was trying to put into words this very question.IMADreamer wrote:We build this big awesome array and then we find a signal that we know is an ET civilization. Then what?

First off, how far away is it and is possible to know if the signals being received indicate current day life or just life from the past? Also, how does earth respond? Send a signal aimed at them? Hey, fellas, we're here; we hear you; cool, huh? Please don't blow us up now?! *sheepish chuckle* K thanks!

Say we pick up a signal from a system 100,000 light years away, that signal would have left that planet 100,000 years ago, when modern homo sapiens were just starting out. Imagine how much they could have advanced since then.... we would seem like primitives to their civilization....

Re: Outer Space Thread
Which kind of begs the question....if that's true, why hadn't they reached out to us? Or had they, but back in the day when we our advanced methods of communication included sending soldiers from Marathon to Athens to announce victory?wart57 wrote:Say we pick up a signal from a system 100,000 light years away, that signal would have left that planet 100,000 years ago, when modern homo sapiens were just starting out.
