I've got something even more manly on the schedule for tonight...

SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL.

Not 16" though, right? 12" is a perfectly acceptable way to sweat out some beer.

Do they play that goofy Chicago style softball way out in the outer burbs?

No, but I had a roomate in college that played it and invited me to play a game once and I almost got my ass picked off. You thought Fuentes was a balk the other day, you haven't seen anything. Leadoffs and balks are encouraged, although you can't steal. Caught me leaning.

I consider myself a soccer fan, but I totally agree that this diving crap is getting excessive. Especially with the Argentina match today. I wish they'd make a rule that if you can't get up and off the field on your own, you need to be subbed out. If you can't muster enough strength to lift your own body and walk off the field, how can you suddenly recover enough to keep up with the most intense soccer in the world a minute later?

At the very least, they need to pull the trigger more on booking the divers. I know I've seen it happen a lot more lately, but players are still getting away with it too much. I'm not sure why people got so upset with your post, because I agree with the part about it turning people away. It does turn some casual fans away because it has become such a big part of the game.

Unfortunately, it's not just in soccer that this kind of crap happens. In basketball, players like Kobe or Garnett are constantly whining at refs about not getting calls and turds like Artest constantly flop trying to get charges. It's just so amplified in soccer because it happens so often because there are tons of challenges for the ball in each and every game.

I actually like that rule. They can give out 1 free injury sub a game. That would kick the diving and laying on the ground thing in the butt.

You know what else would help? If these guys wore actual shin guards instead of those tiny little inserts that doesn't protect you from squat. I never really understood that.

I'm having fun inserting various expletives here... guessing typo?

Yeah, I never got above college rec leagues, and even then it was pretty clear that adults can kick really, really hard.

Soccer has more than its share of drama queens, but I think goalies are about as tough as anybody outside of boxing, MMA, etc. Special teams guys in football may be tougher or crazier. Anyway I tried to learn goalkeeping with the help of a couple of decent HS soccer players, and I became convinced the only reason they were helping me was that they had found a legal way to beat the snot out of me. They were right though, that in a breakaway situation a goalie's job is to run straight at the guy with the ball, even though that guy can kick the ball 70 mph. When I was running towards the ball, I swear I had two pumpkins between my legs.
