Well if you went into the night thinking that the Republican party is full of white, oil-happy, arrogant war-mongers who are incapable of compromise, they certainly didn't do much to kill those stereotypes.

I thought their constant, flippant remarks about Obama's experience as a "community organizer" were funny. Heaven forbid that he was an activist in South Chicago while Palin was busy being a wife and mother. But I guess they figured that they weren't going to get the urban black vote anyway, so why try.

Guilliani's speech really irked me. He's one of the last guys who should be throwing stones, and he was slinging them out there like Brett Favre.

Totally agree, thats why I thought she gave a good speech, because the goal was to iginite the GOP base. That is the first thing you do in any presidential election. If you don't have them, the independents won't even matter.

I just also think that speech ignited the Dems base.

McCain must go after the independents tonight, I think that is their plan.

"Kalnins has preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted into heaven; and preached that the Sept. 11 attacks and the war in Iraq were part of a world war over Christianity, The Huffington Post reported after reviewing recorded sermons by Kalnins."

Interesting. And not receiving much coverage....yet.

Some of the parallels between her and Obama are striking so far. Young, heretofore largely unknown, energetic, and now adored by their party's base. On top of that you have stuff like this.

I thought it was really third-gradish for the Repub. party to spend the night spewing out one-liners and laughing at Obama. The difference between what we heard from the Republicans and Democrats is pretty straight-forward to me:

The Democrats spent the week trying to unite and find middle-ground.

The Republicans couldn't have been more divisive than they were last night.
There's no message of unity and middle ground out of either side. There's pie in the sky talk on one side and "let's go back to days when" talk in the other.

Well, Obama has been on the rise since he because a state senator in 1996, so I wouldn't say that he's largely unknown. He's been a rising star in the party for quite awhile.

They're both fairly young and energetic. I think it's too early to determine if Palin will ultimately be adored by her party's base. While she's energized them this week, she still has a lot of questions to answer.

Did you watch Obama's speech last week?
We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers. This too is part of America's promise - the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort.

I don't think Obama was well known until 2004, and he wasn't even a Senator yet. That's the first I knew of him.

I haven't heard from a Republican yet that isn't completely infatuated with Palin. I'd put money on her running for President in 4-8 years depending on the outcome. Granted, some things could come out, but right now it's a lovefest.

Oh, I completely agree that Palin has energized the party. But energy alone isn't going to take her to the top. She's got to have something to stand on, or she'll get eaten alive. She certainly talks the talk, though. No doubt about that.

I remember a group of us (meaning my family & friends) talking about Obama in 2000, about how we'd likely see him on a larger stage at some poiont down the line. Maybe it's just because we were living in Illinois at the time, and saw his work first-hand.
