If you have to control it from a smart phone or computer, it seems like it would be worth it to pay a little more for Fire TV or Roku or whatever. We don't have a smart TV either and we're locked into the Amazon universe, so I got a Fire TV. It has a tiny remote and the voice search works pretty well. I would go with that over the Fire Stick.
Not sure if you can watch Amazon Prime on Chromecast or Roku, but Prime has tons of older HBO shows for free. I'm watching the Wire right now from the beginning.

Satellite TV company Dish is releasing "Sling TV" a new $20-per month internet-based subscription service that gives users the following 10 channels: TNT, TBS, CNN, Food Network, HGTV, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, the Disney Channel, ESPN, and ESPN2.
Of note, it looks like ESPN has some sort of opt-out clause, though the article doesnt really go into too much detail about it.

Another option is co-opting the chord. I put a Slingbox on my father's seldom used downstairs cable box and it's worked pretty well. The only problem is navigating to on demand is super slow. Comcast has their evil claws dug into the Trail Blazers with a local sports channel only available through Comcast.
If you could get friends/family to get an extra box and split the bill or whatever it's a decent route.

I keep thinking about going with SlingTV since it has most of what I need and can get the rest somewhere else but the lack options to watch the Cards and Blues on FSMW is a deal breaker for me. Give me that and I'm fully on board.

Doesn't ESPN have an app on Roku/AppleTV? It's not on my Roku TV, but those are the only channels I'd be interested in with that package anyway.

How many people can you cram into an mlb.tv subscription?
