I've come to realize that there's a whole genre that I love, which is Bands Inspired by Big Star. Jangly guitars, crisp production, pop hooks, wistful and lovelorn lyrics. The Lemonheads, Matthew Sweet, and definitely the Gin Blossoms, who had the chops and a really tragic backstory that adds depth to the songwriting.

I bet you were thinking of Luke Bryan, who is terrible (but does have one good song with “Drink a Beer.”BottenFieldofDreams wrote: ↑September 4 23, 11:38 amI’ve heard the name before, but maybe mistook it for Luke Bryan? Anyway I thought it was ‘Gross, No’ country. That album was a great listen. Perfect for yard work too.
Looks like he’s already a really big deal. He’s playing the Blazers arena for two nights next year. Parts of the tour he’s doing with Jason Isbell which would be killer. Let Jason rip a solo or two for Zach and then trade verses on an Isbell song—Bryan has a nice cover of Dress Blues.
He’s also doing parts of the tour with Sheryl Crow. I love how we’re revisiting and giving more credit to 90s artists like Hootie, Shania, and Counting Crows. But Sheryl Crow is terrible. Listen to the bridge to Soak Up the Sun and tell me I’m wrong—and she had eight other terrible songs in the 90s.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. I enjoyed the album.
It is funny because I (late 30s) was bonding over Zach’s album with one of my friends (early 40s.) He was telling me that his daughter (15) told him that Zach is quite popular with the kids in her school. I guess once I started thinking about it, it made sense that they listen less to terrestrial radio or radio in general than I ever did.

Isbell released a 10th Anniversary edition of Southeastern. Remasters, Demos, and Live versions. Like many of you I’m sure, I know these songs so well and it’s really awesome to hear the stripped way back ‘three chords and the truth’ demos. Just man and guitar. Incredible and weighty to hear all these great familiar songs this way.

Sufjan’s new one is great. I’ve never cared for his electro stuff. But this blends it with his familiar and great tinkly banjo-ish stuff really nicely.

im discovering that one underrated aspect of living in nashville is that I had access and exposure to new artists that i don't really have living out in colorado. one example of this is Zach Bryan.
i recently came across him because of buzz via mainstream outlets. Ive been going thru his entire catalogue and there's really nothing not to like. I checked in on his tour and everything is sold out, including his show out here at mile high stadium.
out of curiosity, i checked his tour history to find he played a small venue in nashville back in 2021 that prolly would have been like $30 ticket (before playing the ryman a year or so later). Now i've gotta join a waiting list to prolly pay $100+ for a ticket in the nosebleeds.
Shame.

also, one of the funniest facts about a song....my buddy recently told me was that the lyrics for dire Strait's money for nothing stem from a conversation Marc Knopfler overheard in a pawn shop and after listening to it again, totally makes sense
and that peter gabriel is the howler in the song

You sure that’s not Sting? He co-wrote the song with Knopfler.

Well. Apparently he hasn’t done press for this because he woke up paralyzed and was subsequently diagnosed with Guillian Barre. Things are going well on that front and he’s moving.BottenFieldofDreams wrote: ↑October 6 23, 10:18 amSufjan’s new one is great. I’ve never cared for his electro stuff. He also came out and announced that his partner had died.
Damn. My next listen will be different.
