Dang it, now I'm going to have to go back and research all the greatest games by a Cardinal just to see if you're right.Vidor wrote:And let it be noted here again that the St. Louis Cardinals have never thrown a perfect game in the history of the franchise dating back to their founding as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1882.
So the point is, we may have just seen the greatest game ever pitched by a Cardinal.

Well, it's certainly mindless. Stating that we should bench our star pitcher and prevent him from achieving a historic performance just because "it all adds up", due to the fear that letting him pitch the ninth might increase his chance of injury by 0.0000000000000000000000000000001%, is essentially the definition of mindless. You can manage a pitcher's innings in smart ways. You can lift him in games like I was talking about where he's leading 8-2 after the sixth. You can skip his starts once in a while. You can limit him to 5 IP a start in September when the team's storming to a division title. You can do it in smart ways; tonight would be a very dumb way.Cheddar Tom wrote:It's neither mindless or stupid...it's recognizing that young arms (in this case one that hasn't even thrown 150 innings) expected to go through a 6-month grind and if they are lucky, 7 months, should not be throwing 110+ pitches every other time they go out there. This is not as simple or reductive as "it's just one inning...it's just 10 pitches." There is far more that goes into it.Vidor wrote:It doesn't confuse me, I just think it's mindless and stupid.

I'm curious. Certainly not Carlton's 19K game when he gave up two dingers and lost.Fat Strat wrote:Dang it, now I'm going to have to go back and research all the greatest games by a Cardinal just to see if you're right.Vidor wrote:And let it be noted here again that the St. Louis Cardinals have never thrown a perfect game in the history of the franchise dating back to their founding as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1882.

That's a contender. Of course Gibson gave up five hits. OTOH he was pitching against the AL champions in the World Series.fanforever wrote:start with the 1968 World Series game 1Fat Strat wrote:Dang it, now I'm going to have to go back and research all the greatest games by a Cardinal just to see if you're right.Vidor wrote:And let it be noted here again that the St. Louis Cardinals have never thrown a perfect game in the history of the franchise dating back to their founding as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1882.

3 run game and he was absolutely cruising. This isn't Baker leaving Prior in for 130 up 8-2.Cheddar Tom wrote:It's neither mindless or stupid...it's recognizing that young arms (in this case one that hasn't even thrown 150 innings) expected to go through a 6-month grind and if they are lucky, 7 months, should not be throwing 110+ pitches every other time they go out there. My concern tonight was that he could get into the 120-125 pitch count really easily. That's a danger zone. He didn't, though. So, no problem.
We have to put a strategy in place to get him some time off, though. And I prefer to spread it out so that he stays sharp. We can talk about all that in some other thread on some other day.
