Very sad story about Grant Wahl. His wife is an infectious disease physician whose articles I have read re: COVID and the health impact of diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.
The Brazil loss to Croatia was akin to a team that has 10 hits with multiple chances with RISP and gets 1 run out of it. Then, the other team only has a walk and homerun and wins the game.

Yeah Croatia sucks. Argentine, the class acts, are going to destroy them.

The fact that this isn't entirely a ridiculous question, on account of he wore a rainbow t-shirt, tells us all we need to know about FIFA. WTF are we doing in Qatar?

Lining the pockets of a select few 1%'ers.

No evidence to support that but his wife is uniquely positioned and qualified to find out, as a member of the President's covid council and an infectious disease expert. It seems that his brother is comfortable questioning possible conspiracies on twitter but his wife has not.
Either way, it's been surreal. I listen to his podcast and he had been talking about being ill for the past few episodes. Since his death, a Qatari journalist has also died at the tourney. There was also a worker death from a fall at the same game where Grant died.

Curious.

Well if they are killing journalists they could always just launch a golf tour in the US. Former presidents will be compelled to defend them.

Weird.
Also weird. There are reports of Gio nearly being sent home, loud enough reports that Gio felt it necessary to respond to them.

Timeline:
GGG is a guest speaker at a "leadership summit" after we get knocked out. He tells an anecdote about leadership, engaging the team, etc that happened in the world cup camp in which a player was told before the first game that their playing time was going to be limited and not for health reasons. The player responded by having a bad attitude and not trying in practice and a scrimmage (after a year long difficult battle to get healthy in time to perform at this tournament). GGG engages the team leadership council, chiefly, Tyler Adams. They hold a team vote about whether or not the player should be sent home. It is a very close vote (which indicates this is not a new thing with Gio) but he gets enough votes to stay. Adams and others give Gio an ass chewing about his effort. He apologizes to his teammates and coaches, his effort improves, and he ultimately gets playing time in the Holland game.
Men In Blazers reports on the facts of the leadership summit speech/interview.
Tom Bogert does some investigating into the MIB report and verifies that the player was Gio. Everyone already figured that out through context clues after the initial report.
Turns out, the Athletic boys, Tenorio & Stejskal, already had the story in the chamber before the MIB & Bogert news, but were holding back out of respect for the Grant Wahl death newscycle.
Gio releases a statement acknowledging it was him, takes accountability for his failings, but points out the hypocrisy, inconsistency, and unprofessionalism on GGG's part, also without naming names and not in such harsh words.
Ultimately I like this. Learning moment for a key player. All signs point to GGG having no intention of returning to coach said player, which all but DQ's him from keeping the MNT job, and confirms that he wants to step away to return to the club game. Yet another reason to turn the page and let fresh eyes take over for the 26 cycle. Ultimately, having a guy like Tyler Adams take the lead in how to handle it removes a lot of excuses that Gio may have made, because the criticism is coming from his peers, and peers that have already accomplished as much or more than him on the field. Definitely reframes GGG's comments about Gio throughout and paints a picture of a manager who was tired of covering for the attitude issue of an important, but ultimately young and imperfect player and getting criticized for it.

Grant's body is in the states and his brother no longer suspects foul play, fwiw.
