If you're talking about at a bar, I don't know. In Little Rock, $3-5 depending on bar. At Busch Stadium I guess they're $8ish

At a bar. Bud/Coors/Etc. are usually $5-6, anything decent is $7-8, and cask beers/microbrews are $9-10. It's not uncommon to have a $10 beer.

Dang. I've quit going out very much, but iirc, most places have $3 domestics, $4-$5 premium/imports/local craft like (Sam Adams/Stella/Diamond Bear). Ususally the local is draft.

If you live in STL and make $45K/year that's the same as making $56K/year in Chicago--you'd get $56K/year in Chicago for the same job you do in STL. You have another $1K/month, roughly, to spend. So yeah, the $4 Bud Light in STL is, appropriately, $6 here when you factor in that cost of living plus that A-B/InBev gives up about 30% of the $$$ for the privilege of selling their wares in the great state of IL as a not-in-state brewer.

My buddy Drew is starting up a brewery in NW Indiana. They sell only in IN. He won't sell in IL, probably ever*, because he won't give up that 30%. Because he's awesome he doesn't have to--his account waitlist is well over 20 deep just in NW Indiana. If you want his beer you have to go over to Indiana and get it. Think about that: dude moved to the boringest, blandest, worst piece of crap state in the union, a state full of roadside fireworks/24 hour porn stors/all-u-can-stuff KFCs, a state where the only benefits are cheap gas and a liberal speed limit that allows you to fly right through when there's not some hayseed driving 52 in the passing lane alongside another hayseed driving 52 in the not-passing lane, because he can do better business than he can in IL as a brewer.

As much as 1 of every 3 bucks you spend on a beer is tax. The bigger the city, the more political fingers need to touch the tax, and the higher it gets. If you're in Cuba, IL or something you're probably paying state tax and a penny or two to the city. If you're in Chicago you're probably paying the state tax plus a buck to the city.

*except some stuff that he's brewing on contract at Pipeworks this summer and a batch that a handful of chefs and beer guys are brewing with him in mid-May (myself included, woot woot) for a one-off that is being distro-ed through his backchannels.

I guess I can see the reasoning behind the policy, but can't they just contact the person and verify the accuracy of the tip?

A Waffle House waitress has received a $1,000 Mother's Day tip directly from her customer after the restaurant refused to give it to her because it was left on a credit card.

That is illegal. A tip seen by the law as a gift from diner to server for services. It's not the restaurant's place to determine what happens with it other than collecting it via credit card receipt and paying it out to the server.
