Rumor on another site is Holliday has agreed to a 7 year $119 M offer with an opt out clause.

If (I know big if) that is true what do you think?

I don't like player opt out clauses, but it is better than having him opt out right now by not signing with the Cardinals.

At this point, I'm comfortable with Doc speculating on real and fake boobs.

If a guy gets paid $17M or whatever a year and is so good that when he hits 37 years old he can to better testing the open market, I say we got our moneys worth. Give him an opt-out if he wants it.

The opt out may be as soon as after 3 years (age 33).

a 3/51 deal for Holliday is a huge win for the Cardinals. With a contract like that the cards win either way. Either getting him for a prolonged deal at below market prices, or getting him on a short term deal during his prime for considerably less than a 3 year deal would normally cost. Considering the standard contract is backloaded and it may potentially be an even better deal.

I'm ignorant how draft situation works. Would we also get a compensation pick if he opted out of the fourth+ years?

Under the current rules, the Cardinals would have to offer arbitration first, it would make sense for the Cardinals to offer arbitration if Holliday had a good enough season to think he can get a raise on the open market. But, who knows what the rules will be at that time?

based on what jim and theosqua said, and on what we expected keeping him would cost, i would say 7/119 is an excellent deal for the cards;

and assuming we also keep pujols for the length of this deal, i would say i'm optimistic about this coming decade :D

this has been my thinking from day one...An opt-out clause for Holliday favors the Cards much more than Holliday himself... A 4 year deal at 17 mil is a great deal especially during the good years of his career...and doesn't tie the $$ in 8 years when we have to make a move on someone younger & enterprising.
