The first time I thought about the Civil War in this thread was when I read that our republican VP candidate and her husband belonged to a secessionist party.

for those who need a little brushing up on Fascism...

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

I think Websters dictionary's definition is probably more acurate than one thought up for some guys website.

A political philosophy, movement,or regime that exalts nation and ofter race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

In other words, more like Hitler and Moussolini's government than what was in the definition you gave as an example.

what I gave wasn't an outdated definition of Fascism, it was the main characteristics of Fascism...

do you disagree with some of the characteristics?

they seem pretty spot on to me...Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy had pretty much all of them...and we have quite a few...

we're better than those countries were obviously, but not b/c the extreme right isn't trying...

Isn't the thread about over when we start making comparisons to Nazi Germany?

If the right is trying to become fascists, then the left is trying to become communists. :? You can't seriously be comparing them to what happened in Nazi Germany, are you? Your obvious dislike (hatred?) of people on the right is a little disturbing to me.

I'm not making comparisons to Nazi Germany...the Nazi's didn't like organized religion as part of their fascism...

I'm just trying to figure out if someone honestly believe that fascism can be defined by one or two lines, b/c most sholars these days don't even agree on a definition...
