Re: Mizzou football '13
The SEC will have two teams in the BCS games. I'm not sure which route gives them the better shot at getting to a BCS game, I'd have to think it's A. But, even then, if they lose to aTm and aTm beats LSU, the committee would conceivably have three 2-loss teams to choose from: Auburn, aTm, and Mizzou. I doubt Mizzou gets chosen. Of course, if B happens, they are still a 2-loss team and there could conceivably be four 2-loss teams. And, in that case, I think Mizzou has a better chance if they stick close to Bama. But, even last year, GA didn't make a BCS game iirc and Florida got in even though GA gave Bama all they wanted.

Actually, the only way Mizzou makes it to a BCS game is by winning the SEC.
So, looking at it like that, I'd rather see them win out and win the East.

Not even as an 11-1 team that loses the SEC championship?AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Actually, the only way Mizzou makes it to a BCS game is by winning the SEC.

No. Georgia with to the Capital One Bowl last year and Florida went to the Orange Bowl or whatever it was where Louisville beat them.JL21 wrote:Not even as an 11-1 team that loses the SEC championship?AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Actually, the only way Mizzou makes it to a BCS game is by winning the SEC.

Similarly, although in a different conference, the year that Mizzou lost the Big XII championship game, KS snuck into a BCS game despite not even winning the North, OU went as the Big XII champ and Mizzou went to the Cotton Bowl.
I can't think of a time when the SEC Champ loser went to a BCS game. Maybe FL did when they lost to AL a couple years ago, but I can't remember.

Looking at the history of the SEC championship game, you've got Florida in '09, 'Bama in '08, and... that's just about it for losers going to a BCS bowl. And those teams were ranked #1 or 2. Although most of the losers were also ranked lower than Mizzou is right now.
The 2007 example, when Mizzou got jobbed, is ultimately what prompted the question.
It looks like you're right. Just about the only way they make a BCS bowl is to win out. That kinda blows.

Not totally true. A win in Oxford plus -and esp- a win in College Station along with a good showing against an undefeated and #1 Bama gives Mizzou a great shot ...

Looking at the check list of destinations for SEC championship game losers, it looks like the most likely destination would either be Atlanta or... whatever the hell the Citrus Bowl is called now, wherever the hell it's played.
This is all way, way, way ahead of schedule, though. Ole Miss and aTm are going to be really tough games. Whichever jackass brought this stuff up should be shot.

The aTm game is in Columbia not College Station. At least I hope so because I've been offered a ticket.
I think it's far from a given that the SEC gets two bids this year. Clemson's only loss is to FSU and they play South Carolina the last week to possibly improve their resume. Two of Texas/Baylor/Oklahoma could get bids. If Stanford beats Oregon tonight or Oregon loses the Pac 12 title game there could be two bids there. Plus NIU and Fresno State possibly getting in. Notre Dame could also win their last three including a game against Stanford to get to 10-2.
That said, Mizzou's best chance at the BCS besides winning the SEC title is to lose a close game to Bama. There isn't another obvious team to jump them for a second bid in that scenario. Auburn is going to have at least two losses if not 3. LSU is going to have 3 losses, if not 4. aTm would have three losses if Mizzou beats them. South Carolina maybe if they finish with 2 losses and beat Clemson the last week.
Either way I'm rooting for the Tigers to make the title game. That's a huge accomplishment even if it doesn't result in a great bowl bid.

Re: Mizzou football '13
Different thread, but it'll be interesting to see how the selection committee for the final four or whatever they are going to call it treats conference game losers.
Obviously the BCS has chosen to overlook them, mostly.
But, I don't know how you pick a team that didn't win it's division over the team that did. Of course it's possible that they go the PC route and just take the winner of the B1G, SEC, Pac-12 and whoever is better from the ACC/BigXII or whatever. But, looking at last year, it's tough to argue there was a team better than Georgia at the end of the year not named Alabama.
