Cards get Jeff Weaver

Totally correct. What could we get for marquis/suppan/ponson right now? Consider that the Angels had to offer cash along with Weaver and all they got was a low-level prospect. If we're going to unload one of our struggling starters, what could we realistically expect to get in return?

I think Marquis has more upside than Weaver though. He's got good stuff, just no head. A big spender in the AL might look to add him and turn him around. More likely to move in the NL though, good hitting pitcher. I can't really see any one but the Mets having an interest in a player like Marquis. And I dont' know why STL would deal to them

He's not worthless, just ahrd to find the right buyer. Suppan and Ponson are worthless. Mulder as a lefty as a similar upside as Marquis.

Plus Ponson has a no-trade clause. :slugasaurus:

I could see us moving one of the starters for a legitimate OF if we take on the full salary. That's why Luis Gonzalez does seem like a real possibility. The DBacks are in it in the West and have some good prospects that they'd like to bring up once they start moving their veterans like Gonzalez and Counsell.

He's an expensive Suppan, made inexpensive by a miserable 1st half, and with a better arm.

If we are going to give up Wainright or Reyes I want Carl Crawford.

I agree completely. I've never been big on Green and I think he's too old to give up AW or AR. I think we'd need youth in return. If our pitching were currently stronger, I'd be more willing to entertain the idea since Green could be someone that pushes the team over the top. I don't think he's a building block to help significantly for the next 1-3 years. I only see a slide in his production.

Basically, he's a poor man's Larry Walker or Brian Giles.

A VERY poor man's. Giles' and Walker's strength was OBP by drawing a lot of walks. Green hasn't really drawn a lot of walks since he had a lot of power. He hasn't had an OBP above .355 in the past 3 years.

How about we just avoid all of this by convincing Walker that he needs to come back?

He's a guy that I think we could re-sign at the end of the year and fill Suppan/Marquis's spot at the back of the rotation.

He's definitely capable of putting things together. He's not the first pitcher to have a couple bad years surrounded by normal ones.

I would also like to point out that of all our pitchers, Weaver will have the third best stuff on the staff, right there or slightly below Mulder. If he can actually harness it the right way he can be very effective.

I wouldn't hold my breath, but that possibility does exist. He's not the 04 Chris Carpenter that will shock and amaze us, but he has a more complete package than Marquis and Suppan.

Walker right now would be better than anyone else available at the deadline.

I hope people realize and appreciate just how good he was with the Cardinals. An amazing player, pure talent. Definitley one of the top 5 of his generation. Just didn't stay healthy.
