Oddly enough, another free agent pitcher deal that worked out really well was Jon Lester that offseason, a guy that the Cardinals did engage with to some extent because they had narrowed their focus to a left-hander for some weird reason. Also there were Cole Hamels rumors and of course the well-documented David Price pursuit. Luckily James Shields was, and I guess probably still is, right-handed.

There's better reporting on this from Goold. The takeaway is that payroll was going to $200M+ last year most likely until they became sellers and not buyers and that's what they anticipate this year which gives you $55M which I'm sure is not a hard number and there plenty of ways to manipulate payroll in a given season.

Chaim Bloom would be nice, but this is a failed off-season unless they bring Max Bialystock into the front office, too.

It may work out just fine, but after last season's disaster going with a "one year/lottery pitcher", hoping someone outperforms what they did last year might come back to haunt them. Just go get someone else who was good last year where you don't have to hope they get better.

Yeah, they think they want Zack Thompson to get some innings and there are guys like Graceffo and McGreevy (somehow) that he mentioned as well as Libby as potential starters, and I can see how that could afford you to do something like Glasnow or maybe Lance Lynn if you really nailed down the other two spots, but those guys will get opportunities organically. Two of the guys in your opening day rotation will get hurt if you're lucky. There will be innings. You sign Aaron Nola who should be dependable and probably would be, and he doesn't even make it out of spring training, like Saving Private Ryan where the guy in the boat hundreds of yards from the beach in Normandy gets shot in the head before the ramp thing even goes down. There will be innings. It's like they've learned their lesson but only kind of. They need to give Chaim Bloom some money so he can tell them they're stupid.
