I had to grab some tums. Is there anything in sports that brings more dread and excitement than actually caring about something that only happens every 4 years?Fat Strat wrote: I'm shaking with nervous energy right now.

For non-soccer fans: Imagine MLB playing the World Series once every 4 years, and the Cardinals only had 3 games to make the postseason.trill wrote:I had to grab some tums. Time for a prediction: US 2-1 over Ghana. Goals by Jozy (long run, fed from Bradley) and Geoff Cameron (header off a set piece). We play an old-school US style defend and counter game, but the suspect back line is solid. Ghana's goal comes late.

Re: 2014 World Cup
Interesting lineup for the US. Same as the Nigeria game, but they're not listing it the same. I thought the midfield and attack play in the Nigeria game was as good as we have seen from the US recently. The Nigeria game was a 4-2-3-1; I would call this a 4-2-2-2... They're listing it as a 4-4-2.
Johnson, Besler, Cameron, Beasley
Beckerman, Jones
Bedoya, Bradley
Dempsey, Altidore
I think we'll have to see what Dempsey does here. In the Nigeria game, he covered the left side, (as I said, more o fa 4-2-3-1). If Dempsey is pushing forward with Altidore, then Bradley is probably going to have to cover that left side more, rather than roaming in the middle and chasing the ball down, which he does so well. At the same time, Beasley does a good job of pushing forward like a midfielder. With Beckerman and Jones back there, Johnson and Beasley can make runs and will probably help develop some counters.
I'm not a huge fan of Jones' ball control and delivery skills, so I would like to see Dempsey play back a little, so that Bradley doesn't have to leave the center. Defensively, I think we're going to be tough to score on. You've got 6 solid defenders back there.
edit: BTW, if this is the lineup throughout the WC, how good with Donovan look in Bedoya's spot?

I'm excited for it. The thing that's weird to me about it is that they really don't have a "regular season" leading up to it. It just jumps straight to a massively important playoff. So unless you follow soccer really closely, you don't know who the players are outside of a couple star players. I guess I need to follow pro soccer more closely...But even without much familiarity with the players, I'm still looking forward to it.

Re: 2014 World Cup
Well... The regular season would be qualifying matches in your region. CONCACAF is our region. So, I follow that closely. Most of the games are televised on ESPN, so it's a good way to get to know the Natl Team.pioneer98 wrote:I'm excited for it.
