Former Arizona Cardinals fullback Reagan Maui'a says he met the girlfriend of Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, a woman the university and Te'o now say doesn't exist.

Maui'a told ESPN that he met Lennay Kekua in 2011 while he and some teammates were on a charity mission to American Samoa.
Maui'a told the network that this was before the woman met Te'o and that he and Kekua became ''good friends.''

NMA takes on Te'o. Enjoy the "butt-chugging with leprechauns", in the words of Spencer Hall.

former teammate alert:
While not saying that Manti Te'o participated in or knew about the hoax that his girlfriend did not exist, a former teammate told ESPN's Bob Holtzman on Wednesday that players knew the woman wasn't really his girlfriend even though Te'o played that up as his tragic story was being told.
The teammate portrayed the move as part of the All-American's personality, telling ESPN that Te'o liked attention so much that he would sometimes point himself out to friends when he was on television.

It is surprising to see the benefit of the doubt that Te'o is getting, seeing as how he is already a known liar, and that the "he was in on it" explanation is simpler, more logical, and more consistent with the facts as they are known. He also apparently ducked the interview with ESPN today and still has not spoken with the press, which does not exactly scream honesty and openness.
Anyway, Sports Illustrated looks even worse now than they did before, as it turns out Thamel found out everything about there being no documentary trace of the girlfriend, and ignored it.

Unless Te'o was somehow in on this with this guy too (keeping in mind neither I nor I suspect anyone else here have ever heard of this dude), this seems like a big piece of evidence in favor of him being duped. I'm kind of shocked that's not being explored more by the people reporting on this.
Also, CNN apparently interviewed the director of Catfish today and he said Te'o wasn't these people's only target. Maui'a could have been another one.

Continued to lie about his girlfriend after supposedly finding out he'd been hoaxed

Casting Te'o as a victim simply doesn't jibe with the known evidence.

I still think there's a possibility that he could have been in denial about the whole thing on Dec. 8, but who knows for sure......

From vidor's link:
Manti Te'o: I think I’ll never forget the time when I found out that, you know, my girlfriend passed away and the first person to run to my aid was my defensive coordinator, Coach [Bob] Diaco, and you know he said something very profound to me, he said ‘this is where your faith is tested.’ Right after that, I ran into the players’ lounge and I got on the phone with my parents – and I opened my eyes and my head coach was sitting right there. And so, you know, there are a hundred-plus people on our team and the defensive coordinator and our head coach took time to just go get one [of those players]. You know I think that was the most meaningful to me.
HUSTLE FOR THAT HEISMAN, MANTI.
So socnorb, what exactly do you think he was in denial of?
His stated lasting memory two days after the girl called him and told him she wasn't dead, was finding out his girlfriend "passed away."
That's just a lie. He might be in denial that he was duped by some creep guy he knew, but his explicitly stated memory was his girlfriends death after learning she wasn't dead. He loved the attention and wanted the Heisman. Creep.

I think he could have been in denial about the entire thing, including her "not being dead". I mean, this was apparently just 2 days after he received that phone call saying that she wasn't dead. You don't think it's possible that he could be thinking "my God...... this can't be real", in regards to the phone call?
Regardless, I don't know how giving kudos to his coaches is a Heisman plug for himself.

I wish she's turned out to be someone like this.
