Just recently started George Eliot's (Mary Anne Evans) Middlemarch. Virginia Woolf called Middlemarch 'one of the few English books written for grown-up people'. Enjoying it very much so far and feel fairly grown-up tackling a book that's about three times longer than my typical venture.

Blood Meridian is stunning. I also greatly liked No Country for Old Men. The Road is damn good, but I think its reputation is a bit inflated. Maybe I owe it another read, but it strikes me as (and I'm loathe to use this word) overrated. Hardly a bad place to start, but yeah, Blood Meridian. Phenomenal book.

Agreed. You will never look at the entire genre of the Western the same again.

Blood Meridian is certainly special. Unlike anything ever.
The Road, is awesome. One of my favorites. It's style is so plain and it's plot so to the heart, even the theme is as straightforward as it gets. Which is why it's so amazing. I'd read it again.
As someone who read it, loved it, then years later became a father, now, it's on an entirely different level.

My drunk post last night kinda fibbed.

I just bought it from the local bookstore (I dont mind payin' 25 bucks for my fave author, and a cool independent bookstore). But I have so damn much to do today that I won't get to it for awhile.

Plus, I'm trying to finish my re-read of Storm of Swords first. Now that ADWD is in my hands (holy crap!!!), I will be reading at an accelerated rate. GO JON GO KICK SOME ASS ON THE WALL KIDDO!

Thanks for the nudge on Blood Meridian.

I finished The Crossing about 6 months ago. Awful, sad, and beautiful all at once. I love that part of the country, and it makes a perfect backdrop for McCarthy's harsh assessment of life.

So yeah this book is pretty awesome. Sitting outside in the rain, under a propped up umbrella, drinking wine and reading my favorite author. I'm one happy nerd.

part of me wants to rush through it, part of me doesn't because I know we're at least 5 years from the next one and there's a good chance Martin dies before he finishes it anyway.

He recently said he doesn't plan on even starting book 6 until next year sometime. For a guy whose heart has a limited number of beats left that decreases with every cheeseburger he eats, that's disappointing.

I've come to grips with it. This book and the last both took so incredibly long that I'm content with the wait and possibility of never seeing it finished. I'm in Candyland right now just to have new content re:Stark stuff for the first time in 11 freakin years.

Even the maps in this book are superb. I've always loved maps - enough that my mother still insists I should explore it as a career somehow. Man, the new map of the South has so many new places marked. 5 freakin' maps, guys! Five! I woulda paid that 28 bucks just for those! Absolutely some of the nicest looking maps I've seen. Just gorgeous.

I probably shouldnt have opened this second bottle so soon. I'm only 300 pages in and I'm already babbling.
