I honestly doubt if anyone outside of Missouri and Kansas knew before the last 2 weeks that there was a rivalry. In all seriousness, I had no idea that there was a rivalry........... and I live in Iowa.

I didn't know Ohio State and Michigan were crazy rivals until I went to college. Does that change the fact that its a huge rivalry?

Apparently you didn't follow college football? Anybody that follows college football knows that Michigan/Ohio State is a huge rivalry. Not that many know about Missouri/Kansas. I didn't know it was a rivalry, which is why I made the original comment that earned me the "obtuse" label.

I don't see anywhere that I compared the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry to the Missouri/Kansas rivalry. I compared two situations of individuals not knowing a rivalry existed between two schools. The point I was making was that not knowing about the existence of a rivalry doesn't equate to the rivalry not existing, or not being big. If you really didn't know about the rivalry then I apologize. I'm at school on the east coast, and people knew about the rivalry out here before this season.

You do realize that there are billions of people in China that are unaware of the michigan-ohio st. rivalry, so by your logic, it must not be all that big of a rivalry.

The fact is, it is only truly a rivalry to the teams involved or the fans thereof. Does Chase Daniel care about the "rivalry" aspect of Florida/FL State? Probably not. He might care about the game insomuch as it affects where his team falls in the standings. He probably cares more about TX/OU because of his ties to the area, and I'm betting the rivalry is at least as important as how it affects his current team.

So a Missouri fan talks smack about the KU game. Just like Card fans talk smack about Cub games when we win. In fact, it is even more important for bad teams than good. If the Cards lose all their games next year except they beat the Cubs every time we see them, WE ARE GOING TO TALK SMACK TO CUB FANS. They're gonna say yeah but you suck and we're gonna say, yeah but we beat you... OU laughs at the Longhorns a lot more than the Longhorns laugh at OU

The implications of this game made it more intense and important, but the rivalry of this game between the two teams is still a rivalry, whether people in China, Hawaii, Iowa, or Moundridge Kansas, have ever heard of it.

MU v. KU in basketball is one of the biggest rivalries in the sport. It's not UNC/Duke, but other than that, I can't think of any other that's as big. Every year, when ESPN has Rivalry Week, MU v. KU is one of the most hyped games they have. So while MU/KU in football isn't as big in football, OSU/Michigan isn't as big in basketball.

With all due respect, I don't know how you couldn't have known that MU and KU are rivals if you live in the Midwest. If someone on the coasts was unaware, I could understand that.

I lived in the heart of the OSU/Michigan rivalry for 13 years, and Mizzou/Kansas folk hate each other so much more that it's borderline unhealthy.

Michigan and Ohio State isn't so much hatred as it is a supreme battle of arrogance.

Which is both understandable (they're both perrenial top 10 teams) yet not understandable (both have won just 1 national championship since 1968).

I think the fact that the rest of the world doesn't- or didn't- pay much attention and that typically there is not much at stake, rankingwise, yet everything at stake- makes MU v KU a very cool rivalry.

I was digging how all the major news outlets incl NYT and WSJ were jumping in with stories on the history and the bitterness of The Border War.

I didn't know that Missouri/Kansas was a rivalry. And I'm still not entirely certain why it is. I live in the Midwest, but I'm a LONG way from Kansas. In my neck of the woods (and I live 5 minutes from Missouri, and work with dozens of Missourians), the Missouri folks are far more concerned about beating Illinois than they are about beating Kansas. I don't know who voted in this poll, but they say that Illinois is a bigger rival for Missouri than Kansas is:

I wasn't aware that Missouri/Kansas was that much of a basketball rivalry, either. How often does Missouri beat Kansas in basketball? How often is it even a very close game (I'm not being sarcastic...... I honestly don't know). The Missouri/Illinois game in St. Louis is far more anticipated for the Missourians around here.

Frankly, I don't think that it's that big a rivalry in basketball, either.

Because they were 2 of the top 3 teams in the country. Otherwise, nobody outside of portions of Missouri and portions of Kansas really recognize the rivalry.
