I hear ya. That's the way this stuff is done. You and I hate it, but people eat it up and Fox and CNN just give the people what they want. It will get a little better once the convention actually starts. If you recall, all the leadup to the Dem convention was all the sensational, "What will Hilary do?" "What will Bill say?" "There is disarray in the party". etc.Fat Strat wrote:What's hacking me off right now is that I can't get coverage of what's going on without being bombarded by talking points and pundits from both sides of the aisle. Just this morning I turned on ABC for a little while to get an idea of what happened at the convention last night and the only thing they had was a report that raked republicans over the coals for going to parties last night in Minneapolis while Gustav was hitting the gulf coast... parties sponsored by big oil and washington lobbyists. I guess that's news, but man was it over the top partisan.
I'm finally getting interested in this campaign and all I'm getting are politicized editorials from idiots on both sides of the aisle.

I somehow missed the "ahhs" and "umms" the last time I heard him speak, hence the comparison to Shatner.wart57 wrote:No, I don't think you lnow what a vocal pause is, it is putting an um or an ahhhh in between words or sentences.obucard wrote:It worked for William Shatner.wart57 wrote:I am tired of all the vocal pauses Obama uses when speaking. joeybomb.
"I think we should ahhhh make sure that ahhh peoples ummm families are kept out of the ahhhhh line of fire."
Shatner would just stop talking for a few seconds to let the suspense build, he was a master at that.

There were also quite a few stories about the parties the Dems were going to also. Lets just get to the real issues and enough with all the games and finger pointing.clement wrote:I hear ya. I have no knowledge of Hebrew, and this is the first time I've heard of the interpretation. Thanks, that helps.Fat Strat wrote:
I don't think this is the thread for this discussion, but if you understand Hebrew (the language that the OT was written in) it's not difficult to accept the scientific age of the earth. The word "yom" which usually translates as "day" can also mean days or ages. It's meant to signify the passing of time rather than one 24-hour period.
Considering that man was the last thing that God created (and that the Bible makes mention of things like dinosaurs) it's not difficult at all to mesh the OT text with contemporary science, if you know what you're looking for.

I can vouch for this. When I was a little tike in (Jewish) religious school and we got to the creation story, I asked my teacher how come they don't talk about the dinosaurs. I mean, little kids like dinosaurs and know about how they all died off and it was distressing that they weren't even mentioned. My teacher told me the modern Jewish way of explaining the creation story - that the hebrew word day could mean much more than our meaning of day, and that a day to God might be many thousands or millions of years to us. Made sense to me.Gashouse wrote:I have no knowledge of Hebrew, and this is the first time I've heard of the interpretation. Thanks, that helps.Fat Strat wrote:

You can assign "day" to any length of time you like and the book of Genesis still isn't scientifically relevant. And even if it were, it wouldn't matter in regards to teaching it in the public school science classes because science isn't about reading a book and making conclusions.

Kids still want to know why they are being told one thing at school and possibly another thing at home. Does being sensitive to all peoples differences not extend to the people who believe in creationism? How should a teacher deal with a group of students who want to talk about creationism?jim wrote:You can assign "day" to any length of time you like and the book of Genesis still isn't scientifically relevant. Don't get me wrong Jim, I don't think they should teach creationism in public schools, that is up to the kids parents to decide, and forcing your religious beliefs on everyone else in a school by including creationism is not right. If the parents don't like it, send your kids to a private christian school. Should these schools get money from the govornment though? I mean those parents pay taxes that educate other kids.

i am a native speaker of Hebrew (albeit modern Hebrew) and i call BS.heyzeus wrote:I can vouch for this. the 7th yom, for which we celebrate the sabbath is a DAY. a single day. evening then day. single day. 24 hours. sundown to sundown. (we - jews - count from sundown to sundown as a day, don't ask me why).
there's no other place in the OT where "yom" would mean anything but one single day.
this is some way to account for the fact any sensible person living today knows the world was not created 6000 years ago, and it's BS.
if you believe, just believe. i can't prove the world existed a single day before i was born. i believe the universe is a few billion years old, because some people i trust say so. if you trust The Book, who's to say you're wrong?

How should a teacher deal with a group of boys that want to talk about girls? How should a teacher deal with a group of girls that are all giddy over Saturday's big softball win and are disrupting the class with talk of the game? I don't know the anwer to either of these questions, because I'm not a teacher.wart57 wrote:Kids still want to know why they are being told one thing at school and possibly another thing at home. Private is private, public is public imo.Don't get me wrong Jim, I don't think they should teach creationism in public schools, that is up to the kids parents to decide, and forcing your religious beliefs on everyone else in a school by including creationism is not right. ++. But for some like Palin, this is not sufficient.arnie k wrote:If you believe, just believe. i can't prove the world existed a single day before i was born. i believe the universe is a few billion years old, because some people i trust say so. if you trust The Book, who's to say you're wrong?
