I'm quoting this for emphasis. For me, it's one of the biggest reasons I've supported Obama from day 1. He seems to understand that while everyone tries to paint America in black and white, we're a lot closer than we think in this gray area. The sooner we start looking for solutions than worrying about pointing fingers, the better off we'll be.Socnorb11 wrote:Barrack Obama wrote:We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers. This too is part of America's promise - the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort.
EDIT: And I truly believe Obama is "a uniter", as Bush used to put it. I don't believe this is just political pandering.

It absolutely is. You are mixing creation stories with Creationism. Creationism is an attempt to use the book of Genesis to explain away the theory of evolution - which is not the same as creation stories. This is what is being proposed at school board meetings across the country.Gashouse wrote:This is basically where I am now. I pretty much don't agree with the Creation theory as stated in the Bible. I'm much more pantheistic - in that God works through nature, or more accurately - God is Nature. Maybe it's a cheap cop-out as a way for me to justify believing in different things. However it allows me to continue to believe that the earth is +- 5 billion years old, but that God still played the major role in creating it. It also requires me dismissing the Biblical creation story as legend or parable, but there are plenty of other sections of the Bible that are just that, so why can't the creation story be that as well?obucard wrote:
That's where you're wrong. ID uses the "higher power" idea to fill in the gaps evolution leaves behind, particularly in regards to how everything began. ID is far more evolution than creation.
Jim - I don't think Creationism is strictly Old Testament. Many cultures and religions have some sort of Creation story. The Creationism discussed at your school board meetings may be strictly OT, but I was speaking in general terms that there are many creation stories. For that matter, epic floods are not unique to Christianity either.
You are correct that virtually every religion has a creation story, and epic floods are not unique. But the creationist like Sarah Palin are attempting to shoehorn this into the textbooks based on the book of Genesis.

I am tired of all the vocal pauses Obama uses when speaking. In a public speaking class I was taught that was a big no-no.

Oh, I'm not surprised, I just find it annoying. Why in the world would you be surprised that this would not also be covered in an equally sensational manner?
It would be just as bad.Of course it is. But it's par for the course. That's the nature of how the press covers politics in 2008. I'm quite sure it would be just as bad if it were a Democratic candidate.
What's hacking me off right now is that I can't get coverage of what's going on without being bombarded by talking points and pundits from both sides of the aisle. Just this morning I turned on ABC for a little while to get an idea of what happened at the convention last night and the only thing they had was a report that raked republicans over the coals for going to parties last night in Minneapolis while Gustav was hitting the gulf coast... parties sponsored by big oil and washington lobbyists. I guess that's news, but man was it over the top partisan.
I'm finally getting interested in this campaign and all I'm getting are politicized editorials from idiots on both sides of the aisle.

No, I don't think you lnow what a vocal pause is, it is putting an um or an ahhhh in between words or sentences.obucard wrote:It worked for William Shatner.wart57 wrote:I am tired of all the vocal pauses Obama uses when speaking. In a public speaking class I was taught that was a big no-no.

"I think we should ahhhh make sure that ahhh peoples ummm families are kept out of the ahhhhh line of fire."
Shatner would just stop talking for a few seconds to let the suspense build, he was a master at that.
