Tony LaRussa's garden is about to become the most overtended on the block.

As much as Tony confounded all of us, repeatedly, with baffling and infuriating moves, it's sad to see him go. In some part, that's because of the unequivocal record of success the team has had under him. (Of course, one can place much of the credit for that on the shoulders of guys like Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter, and Wainwright).

But even moreso, it's sad to see Tony go because it's the beginning of the end of the 2011 Cardinals. I'm just coming to grips with this season being over. It was [expletive] awesome. I haven't loved baseball this much since I was a little kid. And this morning, just 3 days after winning it all, Tony's retirement announcement is the first of many pieces of 2011 to disappear and fade away. I'm not ready to let go yet, I guess.

Pujols isn't going to make his decision based on TLR. He's going to sign a long-term deal. LaRussa wouldn't have been around for it.

That's kind of what I think. I don't know how much this impacts his decision, unless the club picks someone that Albert already knows he doesn't like.

Kurkjian threw Bobby Valentine's name out there as "best guy available". Wow. Just wow.
I saw that and laughed when Kurkjian said that. He also said if they didn't win the World Series that LaRussa would have come back, even though LaRussa himself said he made the decision earlier than the World Series. I wonder why I even watch ESPN sometimes.

I'm stunned. I thought he'd go after McGraw for sure. Maybe we all underestimated how much the health issues affected La Russa this season. I'm happy for him. He went out on top. He's a Cardinals legend forever. I also think he's getting older, this is an extremely demanding job and it was time for someone new.

As for Pujols, no impact unless he really doesn't like the new guy for some reason.

If it's Valentine, I will personally lead a contingent of Cardinals fans dedicated to getting him fired from his managerial position. I'll just need to come up with a snappy name for that subgroup of Cardinal fans.

I would be willing to be a charter member of that club.

And hire a small plane.

I'd contribute to rent the plane and banner that we would fly over the ballpark.
