If they reboot the movie "Major League," the owner won't be trying to tank in order to move the team, she'll be tanking in order to stockpile draft picks and prospects. Oh, and she'll be presented as the heroine, not the villain.
I know you're joking, but sadly we are at a point when many fans actually praise teams for tanking. I hate tanking because it lets some major league teams charge big league prices for minor-league baseball. The fans lose when teams are allowed to tank, and this year promises to be among the worst tanking seasons ever. You can argue that a third of the teams in baseball are tanking, and that's a damn shame.

I kind of
slightly disagree with the idea that "fans lose" when a team tanks. I mean they do lose, but it's at least not as much "losing" as some fanbases have
To some extent, when a team tanks, at least there's a claim that the team is going to try to compete. And now a lot of times the teams basically say as much, which in theory puts them on a clock with fans. Like if I was a Phillies fan, I wouldn't really be happy with the years since 2008, but at least I would have been told that they're going to try to compete after a rebuild and I have something to look forward to. That's more palatable to me as a fan than having a mediocre franchise and owner like, I dunno, the Pirates who seem to have no interest in building a winning culture.

If a third of the league is tanking to try and stockpile number one draft picks then you just have to get creative and REALLY step up the level of tanking so that you can lose 130 games a season and stockpile all those sweet, sweet studs in your system.
With that many teams intentionally tanking the next logical step is to just bring us yahoos from GRB to play for them. At some point it is going to have to get to that level. Well, at least in my dreams. I don't like the idea of tanking on purpose but if a team were to really go all in and make a complete joke out of losing 160 games in a season... I might be able to enjoy that.

The next step in "tanking" will be some owners realizing that since they can't all stockpile #1 draft picks, they should pay their MiLB players a living wage to increase their psychological health, reinvest in the players themselves and their organizational infrastructure.
But yes, having a team actually field a beer league team would honestly be kind of hilarious. Also turning it into an outlet for Independent League baseball tryouts might be kind of fun.

Teams like the Rays shouldn't be forced to spend when there are big revenue super teams in their division against whom they can't compete right now.

Do you all remember when the Cardinals were talking about CarGo as a fallback to Stanton? Those were fun times. Fun times.
He should be playing somewhere next year, though. What a strange off season this has been.

Brent Honeywell (TB Rays) just went down with an ominous "forearm strain". Doesn't sound good.
For those who aren't familiar with Honeywell, he's a slight step above Alex Reyes in terms of overall ceiling. Hopefully he recovers; that's a big blow to his 2018 season.

That's a super bummer since there was just a Fangraphs article yesterday arguing that trading Odorizzi to get Honeywell in the rotation was actually an upgrade for the Rays.

My guess is he'd been shopped all offseason. He's now on the market behind some bigger FA's.
Rays acquired INF Tristan Gray, RHP Daniel Hudson, and cash considerations from the Pirates for OF Corey Dickerson.
Gray, a first-round pick in the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft out of Rice University, batted .269/.329/.486 with seven home runs and five stolen bases over his first 53 professional games last season in Low-A Ball. The 21-year-old made 26 starts at second base and 18 starts at shortstop.

Rays acquired RHP Daniel Hudson, INF Tristan Gray, and cash considerations from the Pirates for OF Corey Dickerson.
Hudson will ideally slide into a setup role behind Rays closer Alex Colome, though he struggled to a 4.38 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 66/33 K/BB ratio over 61 2/3 innings last season in Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old right-hander is due a $5.5 million salary in 2018 -- the final year of a two-year, $11 million free agent contract he signed with the Pirates last winter.

Pirates acquired OF Corey Dickerson from the Rays for RHP Daniel Hudson, INF Tristan Gray, and cash considerations.
Dickerson was designated for assignment by the Rays last weekend despite posting a decent .282/.325/.490 batting line with 27 home runs in 150 games last season. The 28-year-old will become the new starting left fielder in Pittsburgh, though he figures to get days off against left-handed opponents. Dickerson holds an .866 career OPS against righties and a .706 career OPS versus southpaws.
