Unless the mayoral candidate or his campaign actually are involved in the murder, why are we still tagging along with them? I could see it if this show were using the murder as a springboard to examine society (sort of like the Wire), but I don't really get that vibe.

Also, the teacher is a red herring, right? Obviously something inappropriate was going on there, but the fact that she secretly met him at this volunteer joint and got some letters doesn't mean a whole lot. The whole Gary Condit/Chandra Levy thing came to mind.

I thought the initial Twin Peaks comparisons were a knee-jerk reaction, but more and more this show reminds me of it in terms of plot if not tone.

All that said, really well done, and it's nice how these characters are getting developed. The stuff with the girl's family has been outstanding. I used to have a thing for the actress that plays the mother. First thing I saw her in was Kalifornia, playing kind of a gothish hipster girlfriend of David Duchovny's.

I realize I just kind of Modened the TV thread.

My hunch right now is Gwen, the campaign manager/woman the candidate is sleeping with, is the killer. I have no logical reason, just a gut feeling.

And I think the teacher is a pretty clear red herring. That's the only thing that's bothered me about the show, more specifically the past two episodes. They end it with a pretty apparent suspect emerging, but this early in the game, there's no way it could be them.

I agree with all of this.

It's sort of starting to resemble a Scooby Doo episode with a bunch of over the top suspicious characters. And yet, I'm really excited about the show.

You guys know that speculation isn't spoilering, right?

Maybe it's her dad, the senator/Charles Widmore from LOST.

I'm still very intrigued by in episode one where there was something about Richmond going on a trip to do something that he said he doesn't do anymore...l'm thinking either Thai sex vacation or Austrian torture compound. Also, he's been very evasive about the murder of his wife and child.

I put the spoiler tag only because I didn't want to ruin the ending of last week's episode for those who haven't seen it yet.

Game of Thrones anyone? Haven't read the books, but am looking forward to the show.

After episode 1 gotta say;

The King's righthand man, Eddard, is going to kill the King's Bro In Law. And hopefully sooner than later.

Watched it. Almost every actor nailed it, for all intents and purposes. In the books, all the kids are about three or four years younger, and they were ramped up so it isn't as creepy, for instance, to have a naked 13 year old Daenerys semi-raped by her barbarian husband.

Regarding that scene: It was the only minor change from the books that irked me. In the books, Drogo keeps saying No, and Dany is terrified of the whole losing-virginity-to-a-huge-barbarian thing. But, after some uncomfortable fondling and more No No No, she says "Yes" and pulls him close, etc. Basically, it seemed like he raped her the first time in the show, when in the books she accepts the sexin's. I think it's an important change in the characterization. Dany's pretty awesome. Her actress seems up to it; she's one of the more challenging roles, I'd say. Arya being easily the most difficult, as you'll see once this season continues.

Regarding Ned, Jaime, and every other plotline: I won't spoil a thing for you, and I extremely recommend not reading forums that might spoil anything. I can say, though, that there are some [expletive]-hits-the-fan moments in these first 10 episodes that will kick your ass.

edit: 4.2 million viewers for the first episode! Zowie! HBO already picked up the show for a second season (the second book is called A Clash of Kings, but I guess they're keeping A Game of Thrones as the title, which is fine, fine fine). George RR Martin, the author (who scripted the first episode we saw) is writing a pivotal battle scene in the second season, which I can't fathom how an HBO budget will rightfully capture. But! Who knows! Go Tyrion Go!

To people who haven't read the books that probably sounds silly, but it really is important. That's your first insight into how bad a [expletive] she is. The kind of woman who knows the price of what she wants and is willing to do it.

Maybe it's just my natural cynicism but I had no doubt that she'd turn out power hungry.
