Nine years ago today, the Cardinals signed Allen Craig to a 5-year deal that they thought would keep him in the middle of their lineup for years to come. See why the Cards wanted to lock him up early and why he was traded to the Red Sox in 2014:

Allen Craig's career is so odd.
Just..fell. off. a. cliff.
Average OPS+ of around 130 from 2010-2013. Then, about 80 post 2013 over the next couple years. I wonder if coming back too soon from that foot injury (iirc) for the playoffs in 2013 screwed him up royally?

Couldn't turn that foot. Bat speed went way down. That's what happens to non well-rounded athletes. They peak high and fast. Chris Duncan comes to mind too.
He's second in charge in the Padres front office. Not a bad gig.

On this date in 2008, the Cardinals signed Adam Wainwright to a four-year, $15 million extension that ran through the 2011 season, with an option for an additional two years. He finished in the top three of the Cy Young voting in both 2009 and 2010:
