Among the best values on the first day were the Jays taking RHP Jon Harris (my 14th prospect) at pick 29 after some so-so starts down the stretch, the Rays taking C Chris Betts (my 17th prospect) at pick 52 due to defensive questions (I think), the Dodgers taking RHP Kyle Funkhouser (my 19th prospect) due to a late-season velo dip and the Cardinals taking RF Bryce Denton (my 27th prospect) at pick 66 due to being a medium-sized high-school corner outfielder.

The Cardinals went upside with three prep picks (Plummer, Woodford, Denton) and they’re all guys I like with some track record of standout performance and clean actions. I think the lowest pick of the three, Denton, may be the best of the bunch.

6th Round, 191st overall, the Cardinals take Jacob Evans, a LHP from Oklahoma University.

Padres just drafted Trevor Megill in the 7th Round (207th overall). We failed to sign him in the 3rd round last year and received the 105th pick as a compensation pick this year.

The 6-foot-8, 235-pound righty was picked by the Cardinals in the third round of last year's Draft after sitting out all last season following Tommy John surgery. He opted to return to school and made it back to the mound this spring for Loyola Marymount University, where he was 4-4 with a 3.71 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 63 innings through 14 games, including 11 starts. Megill showed his ability in 2013, going 3-3 with a 2.72 ERA over eight appearances, including seven starts. He was LMU's Saturday starter as a freshman and finished that season with a 5-8 record and a 3.57 ERA in 90 2/3 innings over 15 starts.

Cardinals next pick is Paul DeJong, a C from Illinois St.


The catcher was a standout at Illinois State this season, pacing the Redbirds with 70 hits, 15 doubles, 47 runs scored and 48 RBIs through 51 games started this season. He also hit .333 with a .427 on-base percentage and .605 slugging while leading the Missouri Valley Conference in home runs (14). He also led the team in most offensive categories in 2014, and was both years named to the all-conference First Team.

MLB listed him as a 3B, but looks like they're taking him as a C. Senior sign.

He's a redshirt junior, so not really a senior. They'll try him at C, where he would be a legit C if he could be passable. He can really hit. He crushed the Northwoods League last summer, hitting 20 HR's with wood. The kid can really hit, and has legit plate discipline.

The Missouri Valley Conference had Jon Harris, Matt Hall, Jeff Degano, Chance Adams, Brandon Koch, Drew Smith, and their Friday starter whose name escapes me right now all drafted in the top-8 rounds, with three of them going in the first three rounds, so the arms in that league are legitimate.

6th Round, 191st overall, the Cardinals take Jacob Evans, a LHP from Oklahoma University.

He was their closer as a freshman and as a Junior. Two way player who can swing the bat a little bit. Solid control from the left side. He destroyed the Cape last summer, having something like a 0.30 ERA. He was an All-Star in that league.

He started some as a sophomore and it didn't go well. I think he's just a two pitch mix guy and is a reliever all the way. Has a chance to make the bigs though.

Don't forget, the Cardinals love college players who perform well over the summer, and especially in wood bat leagues.

San Diego State catcher Jesse Jenner picked in the 7th.

Pretty athletic kid for a catcher. He actually was a pretty big time recruit out of high school and went to Cal State Fullerton (I think). He goes to San Diego, not San Diego State. Easy to mix them up. He went to some Juco that I don't know anything about, I do believe.

His team played against Dallas Baptist early in the year and lost two of three but he played pretty well. He's a guy who controls the zone, and was a hit by pitch magnet if memory serves.
