Ok, so stupid question from a newbie. When the ball goes in that netty thing why isn't it always a point for the team that knocked it in?

This is some complicated game. I think I don't like it.

are you talking about the USA game yesterday? Because that goal got called off by a penalty... the same way a yellow flag takes away a touchdown in football...

So we got penalized because we allowed on of their guys to grab us around our neck and pull us down?

Crazy rules.

Jim, an NBA fan like yourself should be able to recognize a dumbass ref when you see one, lol.

It's different, I at least see the ref make the signal as to what was called and who it was called on. Does anyone even know what the foul was?

It was called on Bocanegra for pushing before the free kick was taken. It's bull [expletive], but it's what the call was.

That was called on the field, or after the guy got sick of getting pestered with questions days later?

Soccer reminds me of figure skating. It's the same [expletive]. Athletes are a bunch of whining prima donna's and refs with a grudge against a certain countries.

I'm really enjoying the WC but this is the one thing I really don't like about soccer

When a Soccer Star Falls, It May Be Great Acting
Many who saw the replay wondered whether Keïta’s fall was the tournament’s latest example of what officials call simulation. Much of the flopping, flailing and falling in soccer is little more than diving to the turf in an effort to dupe the referee.

If successful, the diver could be awarded an unimpeded kick from the point of the infraction or, if it occurs in the penalty area in front of the goal, a penalty kick from 12 yards.

Fans are already seeing as much bad playacting as tricky dribbling during the World Cup in South Africa, despite efforts by FIFA, the sport’s world governing body, to punish divers. Some of the best players in the world crumple under imaginary contact to win a penalty, or writhe in seeming pain to run the clock down or give their teammates a breather.

“I wish it wasn’t part of the game,” said Paul Tamberino, the director of referee development for U.S. Soccer. “Players will do whatever they can.”

It wasn't called on the field. I don't know where thrill is getting his info, but AFAICT Coulibaly has never explained the call to anybody. The foul that "earned" the free kick was on a flop by Altidore, so effectively the ref may have changed his mind on that call.
