Any vodka tasting competition should be viewed with extreme skepticism. Particularly when marketing is involved. At best they're showing the labels to judges as they taste and it's coloring their judgement. At worst the competitions are a scam.

FWIW, in my 20's I never ordered well vodka because I believed mid to top self vodka tasted better. In retrospect it was a waste of money.

When mixing vodka I agree just get the well (although I still wouldn't get the bottom self crap like Bentley's), but if I'm having it on the rocks there is a difference.

As long as we are veering off course, what is the rule about leaving change as part of a tip? For instance, if the bill is $11.40 do you leave the 60 cents with the rest of the tip or is that considered rude?

Ha, good question!

These days if I'm buying a bottle of vodka, which is almost never, it's gonna be Trader Joe's generic for like $12 for a liter. Trader Joe's generic booze is good and cheap.

The taste impacts from context even with nominally identical items are quite real, a fact that is maximally exploited commercially. One approach would be just to own this and accept that we are willing to pay for it, but in practice the contradiction can be a challenge -- it feels bad to pay for cynical BS marketing claims.
