Maybe I've become unrealistic after experiencing two championships that came through the Wild Card while not experiencing a playoff drought greater than three years this millennium. And I could be too jaded by a 100-win team that crushed the division but won just one game in the playoffs.

I just don't care that much about chasing down the Cubs, especially after the seasons their fans had to endure to get where they are. What I want to see is a team that is competing for the playoffs every year and is willing to make big moves at the trade deadline if all the things you need to go right are working out. Where I draw the line - which I recognize is very different from many here - is when the club isn't even trying to sniff the Wild Card or won't make a win-now move in July to go from pretender to contender.

My biggest disappointment is not with signings like Mikolas and Norris or similar incremental additions that fail to close the gap on a division leader. It is with last year's deadline, where they neither really tried to win now or win later.
I think it's a fine opinion, even though I don't necessarily prioritize it the same way. I still am bothered by what I see as conceding the division when there were moves I think could've got us on par with the Cubs.

The Cubs having "significant losses" sounds like a kind of goofy idea when the projected difference between the Cubs and Cards has not grown in turn "significantly" smaller.

OK, drop the adjectives then. The Cubs lost a top-of-the-rotation starter who they've replaced with a top-of-the-rotation starter. They've lost a top closer and replaced with a potential question mark at closer. Pretty much treading water.

The Cardinals had a pretty big add in the OF with Ozuna. They lost Lynn and Rosenthal, who they haven't really replaced on a production level yet. Maybe the internal options or marginal guys they signed will replace that production. Probably not, but we'll see.

Obviously, signing both Arrieta and Holland would be do-able for the Cardinals, and go a long way in closing the gap. I doubt they even try, but at the same time I don't know who else is going to sign all of these available free agents either.

Cards are one of 12 teams kicking the tires on Timmy Lincecum. #duediligence

At least the Cardinals didn't make the worst free agent signing of a guy named Norris this offseason:

I wish people too stupid to make a sensible comment about something like this would just shut their damn mouths.
