I tend to agree, though in reading through most of the Stanton updates on MLBTR, most of the reporting is coming from Miami. We really don't know much more now than we did when this started a month ago. All we really know is the Cardinals and Giants are intense in their pursuit, but nobody has articulated what either team is willing to give up or how much of Stanton's contract the Marlins are willing to absorb. There's...an idea of what San Francisco is offering, but even that gets contradicted. It reminds me a lot of the St. Louis stadium situation: there's a massive poker game and a lot going on behind the scenes but nobody is tipping their hand. During that entire process, we had to rely on bits of scant information that didn't come close to articulating all the machinations.

Big markets getting play. 1) Stanton to StL would pull attention away from the beloved cubs. 2) Stanton to SF somehow would put them back into the conversation(even though we've discussed at length reasons why this isn't true, but; fake news). 3) Stanton to SF is another large market WIN(it isn't flashy or really news worthy for a guy of his caliber going to a middle American market that really doesn't have tangible draws).
Every year were faced with increasing sentiment, that whatever magical reason there was to play in this town is long gone..

The Bay Area reporters have always had loose lips. For some reason they don't feel the need to be qoy.

I don't know, I don't feel like we've gotten very good information out of San Francisco either. One minute Joe Panik is headlining a trade and the next that's not what's actually happening. The Miami guys have done the best job, but that's probably to be expected. I would like for Goold to nail down an idea of what the Cardinals are willing to absorb. Surely somebody in the organization would talk about that.

I'm sure the situation is liquid. But you're right. Except what has happened in the recent past? We show our hand, then get outbid(not Heyward). If anything, maybe they could tell us who else besides Sandy has been put on this specific block? But then that info is arbitrary considering that we could offer Cmart, Weaver, Kelly, Sierra, etc, and he still wouldn't want to play here.

Money, and lots of it, makes a team and town look better...

The Cardinals have the upper hand in terms of payroll space, money, & prospects. They can wait for the Giants, Dodgers, Sox offer and then offer something better. The only hiccup is if Stanton even wants to play for us.
The Cards seem to be playing this very close to their chest. I'm sure they want to land Stanton but not give up more than they have to, but if they lose Stanton they want to drive up the price for everyone else.

Stanton pushes the Giants forward in a big way. Especially if they land Hamilton to cover the defense of CF. A platoon of Span and Pence against lefties/righties is a huge improvement in LF over last year.
Bumgarner, Samardzija, Cueto can never be counted out. Add Blach who has been surprisingly good and Matt Moore is a solid 5th guy the Cards would even love to have. Their bullpen is bad but if that's all they need to add in FA, they can bounce back.
Then if they have to trade Panik, they just move Arroyo to second where he's a much better fit. They have a hole at 3B but it's their only real hole. They can have an Arizona-esque bounceback. Which they are known to do...even year again.
