So how accurate is a fit bit? I've had some health issues and gained about 30 pounds in the last year. My wife bought me one and I've been wearing it for two weeks now. According to it I'm averaging about six miles walked a day and 6400 calories burned a day. At first I thought that seemed high but it's been pretty consistent, but still seems high.

I don't use one but that sounds like a lot of steps. Makes it seem unlikely that you would gain 30lbs moving that much unless you were just eating a few gallons of ice cream or donuts a day.

Its health issues that caused the weight gain, found some otc supplements and essential oils that are working better then conventional meds and not causing the weight gain.

I've never really counted calories before and always maintained that my eating habits aren't that bad. Semi tracking what I eat has verified that but I'm getting close to 4000 calories a day in what I drink.

I wouldnt put much stock in the calorie burn #s with what it does for weight loss. the higher the #, the better- but it won't mathmatically compute how much you can or can't eat. One day my garmin showed I burned 4k of calories on a long long run. I know I should eat more that day, but not 4k more. But that is me. Different for all.

Metabolism and fat is an odd thing. Read articles on study done on Biggest Loser show people. Most put all the weight back on, even with low cal intake. Like the fat cells have memory or a self preservation mode. Can be discouraging with cracking that code. consistency, the exercise and watching what to eat.

How on Earth do you drink 4,000 calories in a day? Hopefully a typo and you meant 400? You don't puree those nasty PB/Miracle Whip sandwiches and drink it, do you?

Part of the inaccuracies in the reported "six miles walked per day" may also be due to your job as a farmer. My wife rides horses a lot, and when she does, her Garmin will jump a few thousand steps for the day after just an hour or so on horseback. The Garmin on her wrist thinks she's walking or running when she's actually riding a horse, because she speed at which she is moving is fairly slow. I suspect time spent on a tractor plowing a field or something would cause the same inaccuracies as you tend to move fairly slow as well.

No I meant 4000. I typically drink a gallon of whole milk a day. That's close to 2500. A couple bottles of pop and a beer or two at night.

I've thought the same thing with regard to it tracking other things as steps so ive been trying to monitor it. It does log a few steps but not anything big. I do think its off I'm just trying to figure out how much.

Walking 6 miles burns no where near 6,000 calories.....you still burn calories while not moving of course but you'd be lucky to burn 1,000 calories walking 6 miles.

Holy [expletive], a gallon of whole milk a day?? That's got to be absolutely awful for you.

Just the fat content alone of whole milk is bad, let alone the fact that you're consuming more calories than you should be taking in for entire day just in milk. If you're wanting to actually lose weight, you want to have your caloric intake at around 1,200 to 1,500 (after the calories burned by exercise and figured in)

Listening to a scientist point out that we aren't designed to take in liquid calories beyond infancy. Studies show zero decrease in calories from solid food to compensate.
Historically we didn't begin taking in liquid calories until beer like 10k years ago with a huge increase in the last hundred or so years. Evolution doesn't work that fast thus diabetes etc.

Something like that.

Yeah, if you want to stop the weight gain, eliminate the gallon of whole milk each day. Replace it with water.

You could literally make no other change whatsoever with your diet and not make any change to your current level of daily physical activity, and you will see significant weight loss after just a few weeks.
