I don't understand how LaRussa retiring lessens Pujols' chance of staying. If Pujols leaves won't he be playing for a different manager? If Tony left to manage somewhere else, maybe, but not retirement.

There just are only 30 manager jobs in MLB, and maybe less than 6 or 8 that would be as attractive as the Cardinals. To name one, the Cubs would be more attractive right now, IMO - higher payroll, lower expectations for next year, if you do win it there you are an all-time hero, etc.

You'd rather manager the 2012 Cubs than the 2012 Cardinals? I don't see them being a real threat next year and have to hope their new GM can work some magic. Sure the 'expectations' are lower, but I'd much rather have Holliday, Berkman, Carpenter, Wainwright, Garcia than Soriano, Castro, Ramirez, Zambrano, Garza.

But there will be good candidates, no doubt. There just are only 30 manager jobs in MLB, and maybe less than 6 or 8 that would be as attractive as the Cardinals. To name one, the Cubs would be more attractive right now, IMO - higher payroll, lower expectations for next year, if you do win it there you are an all-time hero, etc.

The Cubs are not more attractive than the Cards right now. No way. And it's not even close.

MLB managers don't want lower expectations. They want talent and a front office that will do what it takes to win. The Cubs are probably 2-3 seasons away from being in contention. The Cards, almost regardless of what happens with Albert, will probably be the odds on favorite to come out of the NL again. Howard is out for Philly. Milwaukee is losing Prince. We get Wainwright back.

Not to mention the fact that the Cards have the second most championships in MLB history and have spend the last 15 years winning, winning, winning, and winning some more. There's not a single team in the NL that has won more games and playoff games than the Cardinals over the past 15-40 years.

I don't know how you can be so sure about that. You might be right but your certitude puzzles me.

Really it just depends on the individual but I would think that most managers would want to win now as opposed to helping build a team for a few years.
