Apparently love affairs with vampires are a popular theme.

They are. I think because love affairs with vampires afford a great opportunity to meditate on the nature of love. This one is an especially good take on the genre. Go see this movie. It's beautiful.

Yeah. It came out near me this week. I've been anticipating it since I saw the preview and was not at all disappointed.

Yeah. It came out near me this week. I've been anticipating it since I saw the preview and was not at all disappointed.

I forgot who it was amongst the legion of GRB movie-watchers who recommended "Being There" (I'm pretty sure Michael was one of them). Whoever it was, you were correct. I caught it the other night and was blown away. That movie ruled. I think it's a real shame that it's not an AFI Top 100 because I think it deserves it.

It was like if you could take Forrest Gump, remove all the schmaltzy special f/x, and replace it with a bunch of heavy literary references (which you don't even need to know to appreciate the film).

I saw this years ago after several recommendations, was really looking forward to it, and for whatever reason it's appeal completely escapes me.

I've had Chinatown from the library for a week, but haven't gotten to it.

I hope you got to it. Chinatown is one of my favorite movies ever.

I've seen a lot of Hitchcock, but I think his best known films are for the most part his best films. Rope, Rear Window and Psycho (minus the ending) are probably my three favorites.

I haven't seen Intolerance, but the other two are really great movies. I'd add 'I was Born But...' by Ozu (1932) as another old movie that rates up there with one of my favorites of all time.

speaking of... Good Morning is Ozu's loose remake of I was Born But... I like Good Morning, but I think the I was Born But... is the superior rendition.

I don't know if i'd ever said anything about it before here, but count me as a fan of 'Being There'. It should have been Peter Sellers' last movie instead of that 'dr. Fu Manchu' garbage.

zheem, i'm surprised you liked 'Triplettes of Belleville'! But I liked it too. If you want to check out some other French animation, you might want to try "Azur et Asmar". It's really quite beautiful.

Burn After Reading - The latest Coen's has a lot more in common with Intolerable Cruelty than it does with No Country for Old Men. Which means it's not a great movie, but it is certainly funny and highly entertaining. Go in with the proper expectations and you should enjoy yourself. 7.5/10

My Magic - Singapore's best filmmaker Eric Khoo follows up his unforgettable Cannes hit "Be With Me" with an interesting story about a down-and-out Indian magician who is drinking himself to death and poverty while neglecting his young son. It's emotionally charged, but falls significantly short of the powerhouse that was his previous film. 7/10

The Piano Forest - The animation in this Japanese anime is a little lackluster, but the story is solid. The piano competition toward the end was a little cliche, but there was enough quirkiness (especially with the girl on the toilet) to still keep it unique. 7.5/10

Frozen River - An indie film set at the Canadian border involving a woman trying to keep her family afloat after her drunkard and gambling husband has skipped town. A small-time Native American people smuggler steals her car and eventually the two women team up to smuggle illegals into the country to try and get the money they need to solve each of their personal situations. Though there are some pretty implausible plot twists, this is the kind of chick flick I enjoy. 8/10

Henry Poole is Here - Henry Poole is trite. 2/10

Amal - Made by a first-time Canadian-Indian director, this is the story of Amal, a Delhi rickshaw driver who has a brief encounter with a disgruntled and disheveled but wealthy (and apparently dying) passenger who decides on his death bed to leave his fortune to the rickshaw driver. But there are family forces that aren't about to let their fortune go to a poor stranger without putting up a fight. Time is running out for the executor of the will to locate Amal among Delhi's endless supply of rickshaw drivers, leading to a suspensful and ultimately gut-wrenching conclusion. The movie shamelessly tugs at your heartstrings and is just manipulative enough to get you hooked. Seen at the recent St. Louis Film Festival. 8/10
