Rumors have been swirling around the Philadelphia Phillies as the MLB trade deadline starts to inch closer and the team starts to play better.

One rumor that has some legs is the one where the Phillies execute a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for 2022 National League MVP and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

That rumor continues to grow as The Athletic has now doubled down and come up with a proposal for the actual trade.
Quote from si article:
However, the price that the article poses still seems a bit high for a 35-year-old despite his strong season.

"In return, the Cardinals could ask for top prospect Andrew Painter, if his medicals don’t scare them, but Philadelphia would instantly reject that offer because the 20-year-old profiles as a future ace. (Painter is working his way back from an elbow injury and could join the Phillies rotation this season if all goes well.) However, the Phillies might be willing to dangle Mick Abel, their second-best pitching prospect, or Griff McGarry, their third-best pitching prospect, along with a couple of mid-level type prospects."
If Painter’s medical check out, then you hold out for him. They want the reigning MVP, they include their top guy. It doesn’t sound like the other guys are in his category.

Agreed. The thing is they don't have to trade Goldy, so they hold the power. If the Phillies want him, then they need to cough up their top prospects.

That second quote is actually from the Athletic and written by Jim Bowden. He admitted in the piece that it was just a "thought exercise"

What the hell does this even mean? Is it a typo? You’re the GM. Excuse me, the PBO.
I would hope the Cardinals are not allowed to rebuild
Hard to translate Mo's weird doublespeak, but I think he's trying to say that the fanbase wouldn't have it.

When you fall into the toilet you need to pull yourself out, you can't just sit there and [expletive] down the drain.

Yeah I think his point was the fanbase wouldn't allow for a long rebuild, and I honestly don't think it's necessary

But a retooling is and I have two fears surrounding that
1) I have fears about Mo being in charge of that.
2) Even though I root for the Cardinals every game and wantt them to win every game, there's also a fear we get hot post all-star break and sneak in the playoffs in a bad division/or at least come within 2-3 games of a spot, and he sees that as a sign to just be patient and do nothing.

I agree with both points. The second one in particular because that is a real possibility.

I don't think Mo has a blockbuster firesale in him. He might ship a couple of guys out for something exciting, but he wants a team that he thinks has the potential to go the distance next year. Basically... some changes but not a rebuild.

Cards are in a unique position where the parts are better than the sum and could reboot in short time but mozeliak is convinced 79 games will land a playoff berth. Just an absolute moron
