Now you're taking me back, zeus! My family used to go there back in the day. Loved it as a kid. Did you ever go swimming at Royal Landing? Looking back I can't believe my parents let us swim in the river like that. My brother almost drowned one time.

Kinders fried catfish was so good.
When I was a kid, my parents and four of their best friends went in together and bought a 100 acre farm in Calhoun County. It was on a bluff over the Mississippi roughly across from Two Branch Island. When the river was low, it was no problem for us kids to swim across to the island. My wife jokes that this was my Huck Finn phase of life, and she's not far off. We did build rafts and other ramshackle vessels. In retrospect, we could've been crushed by a barge and my DNA is no doubt mutated from all of the fertilizer and pesticide runoff I took in from the river. But damned it they aren't some of the best memories I have.
Google maps shows that the 1890s farmhouse we had on Rose Lane is still standing, somehow. It had a lot of snakes in the gutters and a storm cellar that was the absolute stuff of nightmares.

I'm in Calhoun county often. I have a lot of family there. They have a surprising amount of good mom and pop restaurants.

I always look at google maps when there are posts like this. Found Kinder’s and it’s gone thru some rough times but is planning a comeback (you had me at fried catfish…)
If you ever make it up to Hardin try out the Loading Dock or the Barefoot (it's reopening this year from flood damage). Both have excellent catfish and the Loading Dock has some great brisket. If you make it as far as Kampsville the Pavilion is really good too.
My memories of Kinder's as a kid were that they had a big clientele of bikers, a few arcade games that didn't usually work, and everything they served was fried (and awesome).
