I'm pretty sure the stadium isn't being financed by local taxpayers, and could bring significant revenue to the city.

regardless of where the money is coming from (which i believe if from hotel taxes), it is still ridiculous that schools are cutting budgets but there is $750 million to put into a stadium for a team no one will give a [expletive] about in that market

Well sure, but it doesn't make much sense to use a tourist tax to fund local schools. Tourist taxes should probably go to funding attractions that will bring people from out of town, like a football stadium.
Funding the local schools is more of a local funding issue.

Re: 2017 NFL Thread
The success of Vegas depends more on the state of the economy than on individual attractions. I don't think a football stadium moves the needle much in overall tourism there. Nevada has no state income tax, and low sales and property taxes. That tourism tax funds everything, including the schools statewide and Clark County in particular. All the people who live and work in Vegas are what make the tourism money possible. It makes no sense to say the market can support another 1% in tax and have none of it benefit people locally except in the form of a football stadium.

Re: 2017 NFL Thread
So will the LV attendances have more to do with tourists coming to town for a weekend of gambling, shows, topped off with a football game on sundays then on the local fans themselves attending the games?
They won't be in the same division or conference but they could have a nice rivalry now with the Arizona Cardinals.
It'll be a bit weird them being a lameduck in Oakland for 2-3 years before playing home games in Vegas. So I guess the Oakland fans even though they're losing their team still gets a few more years to watch their team play in front of them. But I'm surprised they're just not temporarily playing in the UNLV stadium for a few years. Unless that is of course the UNLV stadium doesn't meet NFL standards, but on that thought the Chargers are playing in a 28,000 seat soccer stadium for a few years so that point is kind of moot.

UNLV's stadium may not meet NFL standards this year, but we'll see what happens if the Raiders draw 21K a game like the Oilers' last year in Houston.JoeMcKim wrote:So will the LV attendances have more to do with tourists coming to town for a weekend of gambling, shows, topped off with a football game on sundays then on the local fans themselves attending the games?

Maybe this is part of the reason why there's inadequate funding for schools?
