An American had come due for one, and Bellow's descent into supercilious bigotry sealed the deal (see Naipaul, V. S.).

Now indigent, Naipaul moved to London, where he gratingly accepted shelter in the flat of a cousin. Pat, who in the mean time had won a scholarship for further studies at the University of Birmingham, moved out of her parents' flat to independent lodgings, where Naipaul could visit her. For the remainder of 1954, Naipaul showed snatches of behavior—some characteristic of later years, some not—that tried the patience of his ragtag support group. He railed against Trinidad and Trinidadians; he railed at the British who he felt had plucked him out of Trinidad and left him hanging, without opportunity; he took refuge in illness, but when help was offered, he often rebuffed it.

What kind of a project? Maybe this needs its own thread.

He already violated the terms of his agreement by even admitting that he was working on a Top Secret project.

Let's not push it. I don't want to see GRB pulled into an NSA investigation...

sigh, if the university president praised and rewarded you for academic heroism and bravery, would you murder him while he spent the night at your house, to please your ambitious wife?

I would murder him simply by serving him my cooking. Mrs. sigh would probably go nuts in a nanosecond, though, and yell "Out, out, damned spot," and have me cleaning up constantly. Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble. Then again, maybe my wife would say, "Lay on my muff," I'd lay on some Birnam Wood, and we'd all live happily ever after. Except for the late university president, of course.

We try to be charitable about Radbird and his Depends around here. But I wish he would stop eating asparagus.
Hey, I find Depends to be very utilitarian. And I love the smell of asparagus pee in the morning.

Bob Ross turned painting classes into a great way to avoid bars and men.
