Or to come at it from another angle, if two people are going somewhere and drunk driving is part of the plan, the decision is made upfront, before the night even begins, on rather or not that is acceptable. Some people will immediately ask the question how they're going to get home and refuse to go if drunk driving isthe way while others will just accept it. If you accept it, you not only accept it, but you're actively part of a chain of events that has the inevitable conclusion of driving home drunk. Rather or not you're the driver is not relevant, imo, you're condoning it.

I find this to be the hardest part about going out when you don't live in a city. How do you guys do it from the suburbs? When I come home to St. Louis, I have a hard time planning what to do for the night. I met with some GRb guys two years back in the city, but could only have two drinks because I had to drive home. I met up with Luke in Boston and could drink like a fish because the subway was my DD. If you're as well off as an NFL pro, take a car service, even if it's $50-$100 each way.

There's so many ways to avoid it anymore, there's really no excuse.

The worst, imo, are Christmas parties and random birthday parties and get togethers (like meeting GRBers) and what not. You don't control where they are and a lot of times cabs arent feasible. Plus, you may be the only one going. Thats the worst situation, and you pretty much just have to control what you drink. Unless of course you can arrange for a sober driver who is going to be at the party to give you a lift home or have a different friend pick you up.

If you're just going out with a couple friends, either cab it up or go some place local or have a DD. People say cabs are expensive. Sure. They may run you what $50 a night. It may mean you spend $100 instead of $50. Tough [expletive]. It's like tipping, if you can't afford $50 for a cab, you shouldn't be spending $50 (or more) on drinks.

I really don't comprehend why people drink and drive. When I was younger I knew several people who ended up with DUIs. Thankfully they never hurt themselves or anyone else, but I always thought alcohol must really impair your judgement for people I see as well thought of and highly respected to drive drunk while under the influence.

Now that I've got a few years of drinking under my belt I just can't comprehend why anyone drinks and drives. When I'm drunk I'm fully aware that I'm drunk, there's no impaired judgement or guess about it. I'm so paranoid about it that I refuse to drive even if I have 1-2 drinks because I can tell that the alcohol is affecting me.

Everyone makes mistakes and I don't feel it's my place to judge people who do drink and drive. I just personally don't understand the motivation for it, especially for people like those in this article who have easy means to avoid drinking and driving.

Unlike Theo, I really don't feel any different at one, three, or four drinks than I did at zero. I'm not proud or bragging - I know I drink too much; it somewhat comes with the territory of bartending. I get into the subway with most likely a .1 or higher BAC probably five nights a week. And yet I would say I was intoxicated only maybe one or two. I have alcohol in my system, heck, probaby 30% of my conscious time. I have today off, I had a nice lunch with some friends, had a few, bought a bottle of wine. I'm probably at over the legal limit right now and I my facilities don't feel affected in the slightest.

Professionals who drink and drive are buffoons. Car services for them would be like one of us spending a quarter or something.

Times have changed, when I was in my prime drinking years DUI's were just starting to be something to think about when you got in the car. We were just coming out of the age where TV comedy sitcom's would often have a town drunk for a few laughs, and driving your car into a ditch was funny. I'll admit that I did drive while drunk a few times, the last time I remember doing it was 1986.

Since then ... never that I know of. I guess it's possible that I had one more than I thought during the past 25+ years, but I don't remember it. Part of it is maturity, but part of it education. I've always used the formula of 3 drinks for the first hour, and then 1 per hour after that. According to http://bloodalcoholcalculator.org/ that formula holds (I weigh 200). In fact, it gives me wiggle room as I could add another drink to the first hour (or double up the next) and still be safe. In fact it says I'm still under the limit (barely) with 5 in an hour and a half.

I can hold my booze, I'm nolightweight - and I think 5 beers in 90 minutes is too many to get in a car and drive. The laws allow you to go out and have a few and then drive your car home safely. In fact, I could probably polish off an entire bottle of wine with my meal and be ok (which I would never do). No excuses ever to drive with more than that in your system. If you are doing that then you should stop it.
