When they hired Brian Kelly I had a feeling he would return ND to elite status but didn't know he would accomplish it in only his 2nd season. Best ND head coach since Lou.

So ND doesn't have to participate in playoffs because the were rated number 1, or, because they are not affiliated with any conference?

We are still in the BCS era in which #1 plays #2- the playoff starts in 2014 if the Mayan calendar permits.

Correct, and there is no conference provision in the playoff. The top 4 teams get in regardless of conference, though it has been stated winning a conference title will be a factor in selection.
