And Miles no longer starts. You can't forget that monumental plus.

Statistically he's been in the bottom half or bottom third in OPS among second basemen his whole career. I'm rooting for the guy, I just don't think the signing is as great as people make it out to be. Value is great, but we've got only 2 hitters in the lineup I think we can count on this year. If Duncan and Edmonds are able to produce well, and Juan is his normal self when he returns then we're fine and this isn't that relevant.

I'd prefer to either sign someone better, or call up a minor leaguer if we're going for value. Then go and actually spend that saved money somewhere.

I'm surprised that the Adam Kennedy signing hasn't been greeted more warmly, considering how overjoyed everyone must be at the fact that Aaron Miles is no longer the starting 2B.

Alot was positive with him last night. I think hell be a good solid player. Im not completely jumping on the bandwagon after just 1 game, but continuous solid play always makes me a fan.

In the SABR community, the signing was widely applauded. Some even went as far as saying it was the best bargain of the offseason.

Which was silly, because mediocre second basemen like Kennedy grow on trees. It didn't look quite as bright when Todd Walker was released and Ronnie Belliard was signed to a minor league deal.

I'm worried Miles will get time in the OF.

QFT...having Miles off the field is the biggest plus, imo.

In 2005 he finished with a VORP of 21.4 (16th among 2B) and in 2006 17.3 (17th among 2B, one higher than Grudz). Last year, recovering from a torn ACL and MCL sustained at the end of 2005 and missing the first month of the season, he still managed a 10.9.

My son tore his ACL/MCL, and I know exactly what that injury is like. It is not an injury that you can really recover from in 6-9 months, the knee maybe mechanically stable enough to play but it's going to be very troublesome. Ask any doctor, and they will tell you your second year back from ACL reconstruction is WAY better than your first.

He's 31 years old, two years removed from major knee surgery, and has been a solid MLB 2B both in the field and at the plate. With the money being passed around for marginal players, I don't see how you can't look at the Kennedy signing and feel pretty good about it.

Do the Cards have any infielders in the minors? It seems like they're only producing outfielders lately. And none of them are really sticking anyway, with the possible exception of Duncan.
I'm not overjoyed with the defensive range of our middle infield either. Reyes and Valentin put Eck and Kennedy to shame last night with the glove.
