Yeah, but long-term investments on pitchers are never wise... especially not on an "old[er]" pitcher with Carp's history of troubles!

I don't know I'm just not sure how to react.

Depends on the price of those years. I'm going to withhold judgement on them until we see the numbers. But, assuming that he signed for below market rate right now (he would have or we wouldn't have extended him) he should be well below market value by the time 2009 rolls around.

My guess?

3 years $42 million.

There's no way the team should ever let Carpenter see the open market. It'd be cheaper to lock him up this year than to wait longer.

no one should be surprised by this. All season long we have heard on numerous times that WJ wanted to extend Carp and take care of him first before the negotiated with anyone else.

Since he is the Ace of the staff and gets paid pennies compared to lesser pitchers they felt it was the right thing.

Al Hrabosky mentioned this several several times as did others.

With that I think it is a great move

I think it would be hard for the Cardinals to bring in another pitcher and pay him more than Carp is getting.
This certainly clears the way for a high dollar signing. IMO

Personally, I love the move...

There is no way the Cardinals could have afforded to let him hit the open market, and although it might be a little early, my first thought as well was that this paves the way for another signing of a big name pitcher..

And Carp is one of my favorite Cardinals..so :)

Your post lost all credibility when you said that.

I love the signing.
