People used to could disagree. My theory is because whatever viewpoint you have can be validated online, people don't believe they have to occupy the same space as someone that disagrees with them, and all lines have become ride or die, and all faults are irredeemable. We can't handle the internet. So often these days, people aren't people anymore, but only their position relative to all the lines we've drawn between each other.

I'm frustrated about stupid things people I care about believe about COVID. When I voiced that (perhaps without some necessary preface given the conversation I was interrupting), unfortunately Karp thought it was about him. Maybe he'll come back.

Hopefully generations that have spent their entire life online will find ways to overcome this.

I was a [expletive] here during 2016. I regret that, and I'm trying to develop further perspective.

Rant: I can't say [expletive]? What about the rooster fights I host, how am I supposed to discuss this?

i still think GRB is way better than CT. additionally, karps departure was definitely related to a *politics* forum/discussion. politics is nuts and in our increasing hyperized society, it easily gets out of control. as far as we know, he wasn't asked to leave or even stop his point of view posts. he made a choice and is not bound to it either.

On top of that, people were discussing his post and not making any personal attack on him.

I definitely think some posts were out-of-bounds. And any time you are on a side of an argument that's one vs. one hundred - it sucks and it is hard to not take personally.

12 Angry Men seems relevant to many discussions around here. Except that one person arguing against the masses isn't likely to ever change their minds - they are more likely to just dig into their increasingly unpopular position.

I've contemplated removing the politics forum altogether. I've been talked out of it and I like the idea of letting this forum be a place to discuss any relevant subject with a group of intelligent like-minded people. But we aren't all like-minded on politics.

I don't know if banning politics would help or hurt the enjoyment of the forum. The Cardinals are on an absolutely remarkable run. Right now should be the height of fun for this forum and instead we're seeing posters leave over disagreements and treatments that have nothing to do with baseball.

I am curious how much that drama brings us back to the forum though. So if the forum gets even less boring will we lose more posters or less?

I gotta be honest, I work out a lot of my frustrations in the Politics forum. Just knowing that, indeed, there are people who think like me for the most part is theraputic. It's equivalent to what a bunch of guess getting together several times a week for a lunch or drinks after work would have been back in the day.

But I guess it's the fact that these silos now exist for people 24/7 that is the problem.

No, not true…there were many personal attacks against him and his views. Some were deleted by mods, but a lot remain.

I honestly hardly ever go to the forum so it doesn’t bother me either way.

It seems most of the posts/posters there are the same handful of people who have the same opinions (online) as others there.

When someone has a differing opinion it’s blood in the water. They can’t stay silent.

No, not true…there were many personal attacks against him and his views. Some were deleted by mods, but a lot remain.

There were criticisms of his views, not against him personally.

karp slung it as much as he got it, i'm not concerned with that. i'd agree he was in the minority and that's a tough spot...but you can't help what the dominating view of the board is, particularly in a politics setting, that's just how the landscape of the board is, rightly or wrongly (at least of those that choose to participate). there's no quota of "left leaning" and "right leaning" to sign up here. many right leaning posters have complained about not being able to participate in the politics forum. which isn't really true, it's just they're likely going to be in the minority, which again isn't fun, and they thus don't care enough to participate, but no one is preventing them nor do the mods/or the board have some sort of ideology one must subscribe to. karp chose to participate and likely tired himself out. he can come back when he is refreshed.

i think the politics forum is probably good to keep, mainly in the sense it keeps all that talk *there* and in theory prevents it from casually being slipped into non-politic discussions/forums.
