I would put Doug Melvin in the top 5.

Beane, Schuerholz, and Ryan are the top 3 for me, after that it's Epstein/Jocketty, then a group of Stoneman, Ricciardi, Beinfest, Dombrowski, Williams probably round out the top 10. Shapiro and Melvin are going to have to do something with the farm systems they've built to crack the upper echelon for me.

Maybe, but I don't think he's there yet. That said, I like a lot of his moves.

My top 5:

1) Billy Beane
2) John Schuerholz
3) Terry Ryan
4) Walt Jocketty
5) Mark Shapiro (Yeah, I said it.)

I have never understood all the hype for Beane. Yeah, his teams are usually good, but not great. He took over in 93 and hasn't seen a WS yet. In fact, his teams haven't even been that great in the postseason. He's hyped for having great regular season teams. Him, just likeSchuerholz, is praised for basically being average.

Gillick definitely should be at the top. The guy has won everywhere he's gone, and built the Blue Jays from an expansion team into a mini-dynasty from the early 80's through the early 90's. Gillick was Schuerholz before Schuerholz was.

I don't know about #5, but he could rocket up the list pretty quick. He's laid the groundwork for a long track record of success. Now he just needs to cash in.

The only reason anyone mentions Doug Melvin is because he was smart enough to keep Jack Zduriencik around when he took over from Dean Taylor. Zduriencik is the one that's stocked the Brewers' cupboard with talent, not Melvin.

The more I look at it, it really is a jacked up list.

-Sabean's not bad, but not top 5.

-Beinfest only looks good because he's leeching off of the successes of Dave Dombrowski.

-Mike Flanagan, top 10?

-Melvin, while overrated, deserves better than to be lumped in with the Bowdens and Littlefields of the world.

-Minaya's not bad, but #2 is insane.

-Wj's a lot better than 8th.

-There are eight- EIGHT!- GM's behind Beane who have won a WS. He has not. Yeah, yeah, the post-season is a crapshoot, but isn't the goal a WS championship? Or at least one of them? And no, I'm not saying he should be much lower. Just that I don't buy the #1 hype. He's done some dumb stuff too, just like every other name on that list. He's not infallible and I don't think he's #1.
