The Beer Thread

I bought some New Castle Nut Brown Ale at Binney's because the Beer Advocate, whatever that is, gave it a B. I will never, ever pay attention to the Beer Advocate again. I thought it was bad, but figured maybe it was just me. My oldest boy was over last weekend, he tried one, took one sip and grimaced and asked if I wanted to trade. Smartly I had taken a Capital Brewing Oktoberfest, and declined the trade. I did however give him permission to do something that I rarely do, to pour it down the drain.

I've been on a kick of trying a bunch of different beers the last year and I actually think I'm ready to settle on about a dozen. That's plenty of variety, and I'm tired of buying something new for the sake of it being new and finding out I don't like it.

I'm not a Newcastle Nut Brown fan either but that guy above you drinks the [expletive] out of it.

In Budweiser World, it's the best, easiest, most readily-available beer you can find. There are a ton of beers that are better than a Newkie. But I can't think of any beers that are available just about everywhere that are also better.

They were giving away free BLGW across the street from Busch Stadium before the playoff game. I'm not particularly interested in tasting orange peels when I drink beer but it was free so I got back in line 3 times.

Probably a little too sweet for my tastes. It boasts that it's made with maple syrup and it shows.

My sister's favorite beer is Tommyknocker Maple Nut Brown Ale. I'm generally not a fan of beer with fruit or syrup in it.

Edit: wow, just checked the Tommyknocker site. Didn't realize the Imperial has 9% ABV. I may just have to try that.

I'm confused. Are you referring to Newcastle Brown Ale? Or the one you mentioned- the Newcastle Nut Brown Ale? Or are they the same thing?

Newkie is 10 times better on tap. There aren't many beers where I notice as much of a discrepancy between draught and bottle as I do with Newkie.

I don't mind the maple syrup thing, per se, but a little goes a long way. I even thought I'd avoided the maple syrup trap by getting the Imperial Brown instead of the Maple Nut Brown. And that's altogether possible- the Maple Nut Brown could've been worthy of pouring on pancakes for all I know. But the Imperial was sweet enough as it is.

One of the very few NG products I don't like is that Nut Squirrel Ale, so maybe it's like you said that I just don't like that style.
