what is this "region-free" of which ye speaketh?

Sometimes you can find really cheap versions of movies that you want... but they're made in Korea or China or Europe or whatever. With a region-free DVD player, you can watch those discs.

besides both being possible Oscar nominees?

edit: well, nevermind, neither got nominated for Best Picture. And Bruce Springsteen somehow didn't get nominated for best original song, which may be the stupidest thing I've ever seen the Oscars do.

Since when do movies have to be alike for people to rank them?

Those are the two highest profile movies in theaters right now. I've watched them both and thought The Wrestler was a better film.

Frost/Nixon for Best Picture? I haven't seen it, but I find that extremely unlikely. Probably won't ever know, since I have almost no desire to see it.

I want to see it and Milk but I've read differing views on both, especially with regards to being a best picture.

It may just be me, but I hadn't so much as heard of The Reader before I saw it listed as a best picture nominee.

The only thing that gives me pause is that Ron Howard directed it. But then, I've generally enjoyed his historical dramas (Apollo 13, Cinderella Man).
