i went without health insurance for 2-3 months earlier this yaer. one time i called my old doctor to find out how much it would cost for an office visit, without my old health insurance.

i was cagey and was trying to avoid saying that i didn't have any healthy insurance at all-and they were cagey right back.

when i finally had to tell them i didn't have ANY insurance they changed the amount of the office visit to make it very affordable.

This is what scares me. Why should the price be any different, insurance or no insurance. I wonder what would happen to costs if the government takes over. I think people have a right to health care coverage, its just that I do not want the government anywhere near it. The government is not exactly efficient. Maybe we would be better to find why costs are skyrocketing and fix that first.

I don't know either doc, but I had the same experience. I had an HMO and I literally got put through a run around like you wouldn't believe as I was seeing a specialist (Podiatrist). I needed a cortisone injection in my foot, and I limped around for almost 2 months playing the HMO referral game. Finally, it was 2 days before a vacation where we were going to be doing alot of hiking so I asked how much the shot would be. $200. Fine I say, give the shot now and I'll pay you today. He comes back in and says that since I'm paying it's $115. I said fine, give me two then.

I think alot of it is processing fees, but there has to be some chenanigans going on as well.

Slightly related - my employer dropped my eye insurance coverage. Turns out, if you tell the eye place that they give you the glasses at the same rate anyway. I bought $550 worth of stuff, if I had the BC/BS eye insurance it would have been $325. Since I didn't have the insurance, they charged me $325. They just had to click a box on the form and wa-la, discount.

on the price differences, a lot of offices will charge less for people paying by themselves because they don't see that many and, in the end, we got into this business to help people.

We can't charge lower prices to everyone because it just costs too much to run the practice. But you try to help out those who are asking for help as long as it doesn't sink the whole ship.

I've been known to do some visits free and give some immunizations free...and I've been roundly chastized for it, but everyone understands why I do it in the end and let me get by with it as long as it's not frequent.

I never said I trust the insurance companies and HMOs. I said we need to fix or find why the prices are going up so fast first. And yes I still say private companies can run it better than the government. Do they need regulation howver, hell yes.

Take all off those ARG polls with an absolute grain of salt. The Obama +8 in WV is amazing, but let's wait and see if other pollsters show him making ground.

That ARG West Virginia poll looks like the mother of all outliers.

This one is nearly over, there will have to be something dramatic happen to shift these results.

Right now as of 10/8, I have Obama with 273 EVs before counting the toss-up states of VA, OH, IN, FL, NV, NC, MO and still having WV red. When MO and NC are toss-up states, the Republicans are in trouble.

I feel my 273EVs as of now is being extremely cautious.
