Which part are we currently playing in your example?
We would be (sort of) the A's. We are trading a guy who looks like he's breaking down for something that immediately gives us a shot in the arm. It just doesn't make sense why the Blue Jays would be willing to trade Glaus for minor salary relief and a potentially big downgrade in offense when they aren't loaded with good hitters.

Maybe they are banking on guys breaking out and see Rolen as a good-field/no-hit option to improve their pitching staff. As it stands, this just doesn't make sense IF there is nothing truly wrong with Troy Glaus.

Assuming they could dump Glaus for nothing, he's beside the point when it comes to Rolen. If that's an option, then the Jays are essentially signing Rolen to a 3/33 deal -- because they think it's a good deal.

Or Ricciardi knows something we don't know.

This trade makes Toronto look stupid, wouldn't you say? They are trading away a "perfectly healthy" and still productive, still relatively young player for a guy with an alleged chronic shoulder injury. It brings them only small cap relief and gets rid of a guy who they could still use, since they aren't overflowing with great hitters.

That's why I have to raise my eyebrows at this deal. This must be what it was like to be an A's fan on December 30, 2004. "They are trading all of THAT for a guy who might be hurt? What's the catch?"
There was a short debate somewhere between pages 10 and 20 (I think) about whether Rolen or Glaus was the better bet rebound in health next year. It didn't make it very far, because most people just seem to be taking it for granted that Glaus is going to be healthy and productive next year.

I'm not interested in rehashing the entire thing...lets just say that I'm one of the ones who's skeptical that Glaus is a good bet to be healthy the next two years. I'm also slightly skeptical of the opinions that healthy feet are *much* less necessary for athletic production than a healthy shoulder, and that foot problems are *much* easier to overcome than shoulder problems...but, to each his own. It's an ultimately an opinion (regardless of how educated or uneducated it might be), and it's in no way worth getting bent out of shape over. With that said, here's my take (on Glaus, not Rolen...that's been beaten to death already):

Troy Glaus is 6'5'' ~250 lbs and he's having painful and persistent problems with his feet. A person that size is always going to put a lot of stress on his joints and feet when he moves...in my opinion, this isn't something that's likely to go away quitely. If the condition remains or gets worse, then you're facing a whole host of potential problems...both with his feet, and with other parts of his body as it attempts to compensate (his back for one, which is rather important for hitting).

This isn't the AL...if his feet go, his range in the field goes, his speed goes on the basepaths goes, etc. Remember Pujols hobbling around the field with his foot problems? For a scary scenario, think of a slightly more mobile version of Frank Thomas (with a much worse bat) attempting to play 3B. I'm not saying it is likely he'll get to that point in the next two years (or even at all)...but the point is that it wouldn't take nearly that much for his production (both on offense and on defense), as well as his playing time, to take a hit. All that, and we've also been ignoring the fact that his power (the one outstanding thing he brings to the table) has been trending down dignificantly since his shoulder surgeries.

For your speculation...

Adjusted as accurately as possible with ESPN's park factors:
Glaus hit one double every 4.49 hits prior to shoulder surgery. Post shoulder surgeries one per 5.13. Last year with foot problems one per 5.63.

Glaus hit one homerun every 3.48 hits prior to shoulder surgery. Post shoulder surgeries one per 4.37. Last year with foot problems one per 5.94.

The last few years New Busch has strongly supressed both HRs and doubles. Glaus' parks over the previous three years in TOR and ARI have all been favorable to both. The bottom line: Don't be surprised if Glaus' power numbers take a decent hit while he's here...all the signs are pointing that way.

His defense is all over the map depending on which metric you use, so I won't even bother with numbers. Lets just say that it's currently somewhere between "poor" and "average-ish," and it is not likely to improve any as he continues to age...especially if he has recurring foot problems.

As you can probably tell, I'm not especially rosy about Glaus' upcoming stay here. I don't expect anyone else to be as "pessimistic" as a few of us are about the trade, but I think there's (at the very least) plenty of reason to temper any extreme optimism that might exist regarding Glaus' health and power prospects down to a more cautiously optimistic level.

EDIT: Fixed a couple of typos and edited a bit for clarity.

So are we damned if we do and damned if we don't? We all know that Rolen is on the trading block and that his trade value is diminished because of concerns about his health. Just because we finally find a team willing to take a chance on him rebounding does it mean we should no longer trade him?

I'm starting to feel that that may be the theme of this off season. I don't know if it's from reading so many posts from different people with slightly different views and I'm staring to get them confused or if there really is some of that going on. I could have sworn the consensus around here for the better part of the last year to year and a half was that we were stuck with Rolen and Edmonds and there was no way anyone was going to take them off of our hands. The worst part being the money tied up with their contracts. And it was almost unanimous that their lack of health would ever allow them to play even close to the top of their ability.

Now that we've parted ways, there seems to be little optimism, regardless of the freed up money, and the focus is almost entirely on who we got in exchange for the two, when it seemed as though just getting rid of the contracts should have made a number of people happy. Combined with the outcry for not re-singing Eckstein, and I'm staring to wonder if I should believe anything any of you guys ever say. :D You're all a bunch of softies like me that are going to miss Edmonds diving in the outfield and our spunky little leadoff man sprinting down to first to get the inning started! Of course I understand the alternative, at least as it stands on January 14th, is a little depressing as well.

You don't even need to (though the teams in question making the decisions sure do), based on what you've said. You think Rolen is a top defensive 3B, and that Glaus could be OK. Maybe even slightly above average. What do you think the range of impact that a 3B can provide is? -10 to +10? -25 to +25?

There's a general consensus that Rolen is a modern day Brooks Robinson. You don't think it's likely that he's a win+ better than an "awful" to "just above the middle of the pack" third baseman?
Maybe defensively he is a win better, I guess. But when you account for offense, Glaus makes up for it.

Based off recent history, the comparative stats average out to be around

Glaus is likely to put up 30+/.360/.510
While Rolen is looking at 9/.365/.420 or so

Glaus hit more HRs in 2006 then Rolen has the last three seasons combined.
Right Glaus had 12 more home runs in '06 than Rplen and 4 more RBI's yeah He's that much better

Rbi's mean nothing
And he has 12 more HRs, in 7 LESS at bats.

Rolen has played for LaRussa and Larry Freaking Bowa. Both whacked out nut jobs, one who figured out a way to be a successful manager. I wouldn't put a player down for having difficulties with those two necessarily.

Anyone else on the Cardinals having a problem with Larussa?

Having difficulties is one thing. Basically demanding to be traded is another. Both Bowa and Larussa have had lots of players play for them, how many have demanded to be traded?

I'm not necessarily putting Rolen down, but just saying that it's only fair to think that maybe he isn't the easiest player to manage.

As an addendum, I also don't think Larussa is a whacked out nut job... ;)
