I'm hoping they're actually intended to fail. Just shiny enough to distract Mr Average Fan during the offseason, but guaranteed to suck enough to warrant the pursuit of significant roster movement (especially Izzy) during the season.

I know, I know...I'm reaching, but in spite of what others around here think I actually am a bit of an optimist.

I haven't completely rationalized it yet...it all depends on what he does during the season.

What could be do? If Izturis is hitting .300/.330/.370 somehow at midseason, what are you going to get for a half season of him? Realistically, given his track record, not much at all. Wouldn't you be much better off seeing if Brendan Ryan can pull of a .350/.400 line for a little while? Then you've got something.

What if Pineiro has a nice start to his season? What then? He's still owed $7.5M in 2009. Are teams going to give up much of anything for him?

Why wait? What fan is he catering to? We'll (people here, and even the idiots at CT) pay attention either way. The other guy also shows up at the ballpark either way and checks to see how the roster looks in April. There are parts of both populations that pay attention based on the W/L record, and that's not going to look so hot.

We are talking about a LOT of money here. $18 million to pacify Tony or to supposedly keep up appearances that doesn't translate to wins and hurts the future. I find it shocking either way.

One of rolen's beefs when he wanted out of Philly was playing on the Turf at the Vet. He also had his beefs with Bowa. Now Rolen is waiving his NTC to go to Toronto and play on the Turf with his history of injuries? He nust really hate Tony LaRussa. Good Luck with John Gibbons Scott, He'll be a real Joy to play for.

Only bad moves Mo has made is Izturis and Miles.

I think Pinerio is a good signing. With players that are about his equal, all thing considered, getting deals of 4/44 million, it's worth taking him for 2 years in the long run. The market for pitching is not gonna get better, only worse. He's a 4th starter, but those guys are making 12 million a year.

Izzy signing was also a good move. Perez isn't ready to step in just yet, and signing him gives us a chance to trade him for some decent prospects during the deadline if/when we fall out of the race.

Smart teams don't pay $44M for fourth starters, and Pineiro has been at or below replacement level for two out of the last three years, which is where he projects.

There are no rumors of any kind along these lines, just forum speculation and wishful thinking. On Bernie's forum, he said flat out it's a one-for-one deal, no other players involved, and that people need to stop playing fantasy baseball on this particular trade...

there are some rumours floating around that the deal could involve other players (namely Burnett)...

not sure how reliable the sources of the rumours (yes I spell rumours with a 'u') are but that would be interesting...

not sure what would have to be involved for the Cards to take on Burnett (Ottavino maybe? Duncan? not sure, he would seem redundant with Stairs), but it does have some merit as it would help offset the financial aspect of the deal...

obviously the Cards would have to be giving some good talent back...


there are also rumours that TOR might trade Rios for someone like Lincecum...which would also seem to add credibility to the Burnett rumours...
