Bizarre email problem

My friend asked me if I could write him a recommendation for the Peace Corps. So I do so, filled out the Word form that was attached and email it back to the woman in DC last week. Yesterday he calls me to say that they haven't received it. Weird, I didn't get any error message or one of those non-deliverable bounce back things. I wondered if her .gov address had any kind of spam filter but figured that couldn't be it since there was nothing unusual in the subject line or content. Maybe it's possible that they block emails with Word attachements, but that would seem odd since she instructed that it be attached. The email address is correct, so that's not the problem.

I sent it again yesterday and again it didn't go through. Again no error message or anything. I'm going to have to fax it I think.

Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

I thought about that, but figured it wasn't worth it since if that works, it means I can't attach the file, which means I'll just have to fax it anyway.

But at least I'd know the answer.

If it works without the attachment try changing the file extension of your Word doc.

letter.doc => letter.txt

Then have her change it back if she receives it.

Some people filter out hotmail, yahoo, gmail accounts, in which case you would get no bounce back.

Sounds like a filter problem or something is happening at their email gateway. Have the person check with their postmaster, they should be able to take a peek and at least see if they received it.

It's probably not going to help in this case because rarely, if ever, are .doc extensions blocked. However, it's a good tip to remember because .exe and .zip files are often blocked and it's an easy way to get around it if the need arises.
