Encarnacion out til April 13th

Post by Phyrkrakr »

Per Joe Strauss
Team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta said Sunday that Encarnacion is expected to return no sooner than during the team's second home stand. However, that projection could change if a another examination today shows no improvement.
The Cards open at home for three games vs. the Mets, then road trip til April 13th vs. the Brewers. That's a Friday, btw, for those superstitious types out there.

Speezer is apparently getting a look to start in right
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Cardinals have a deep outfield with Preston Wilson, So Taguchi and possibly even Skip Schumaker in reserve.

So why is Scott Spiezio, a 34-year-old utility infielder, suddenly the favorite to be the opening-day starter in right field?

"Because he's playing his butt off," manager Tony La Russa said Monday.

With starter Juan Encarnacion still nursing his left wrist after December surgery and expected to start the season on the disabled list, Spiezio started three spring games in right field in the last week.

Bern dropped by his forum, with this scoop:
Strauss: Edmonds hopes to be ready by second week of April... there aren't any plans right now to put him in a spring training game.... Encarnacion is in worse shape; Strauss thinks he'll be out longer than what the team is saying.

I'm no surgeon, but my uneducated hunch is that he will be out longer than the 13th. If excessive scar tissue is what's causing the problem isn't he going to need surgery to remove that?

Well it looks like J-Rod and Schumaker might make the team to start the season.
