2 for 2 yesterday with 2 rbi.

If by some chance he makes the big league roster on opening day, he would be the 1st player I could think of that made a mlb squad at pitcher and then as a position player. Can anyone think of another player that has accomplished this?

'Smoky' Joe Wood

Wood's Major League debut was with Boston in 1908. In 1912, at the age of 22, he collected ten shutouts during his sixteen consecutive victories, tying an American League record. He also won three games in the 1912 World Series. Joe was quickly dubbed "Smoky" for the great balls of fire he threw from the mound. An injury in 1913 caused Joe excruciating pain in his shoulder and arm. He sat out the entire 1916 season in an attempt to nurse his arm back to health. After nine seasons as a pitcher, Joe made a short-lived but successful position switch to outfielder, where he would go on to finish his career for the Indians from 1918 to 1922. After retiring, Joe spent twenty years as head coach of the Yale University baseball team, compiling a career managing record of 283-228-1 in the process.

When I read the thread title, I thought of 'The Rick' from the former ESPN commercial. You know, the guy who now is on the sitcom which may be now extinct. Anyone know who I'm talking about? I can't remember the name of the sitcom.

I'm way more interested in Ankiel though.

I'll never shake the image of Ankiel as a pitcher.

Somebody mentioned this over on BTF; there was an article a while back talking about pitchers who had the stuff to throw games with 10+ strikeouts with no walks. The list of guys who'd done this once was populated with a wide range of pitchers, from studs to middling guys. The list of guys who'd done it twice was mostly really good pitchers. Three times? Studliest studs alive.

Ankiel did it three times.

In one season.

In which he made only 20 starts.
